I clean with kerosene.

Several years ago when I started shooting Ruger MKiii pistols a lot, I hated taking them down for cleaning. I started just spraying them out with clp or other spray cleaners. They did ok, not great. One day, when I was out, I put some kerosene in a spray bottle. It did a great job! It is all I use now for cleaning. It is cheap and I keep it around the shop all the time.

Kerosene cleans really well.
We used to use it in our parts cleaner machine.
It's not all that flammable, either.
A local shop kept a small cleaning tank full of it with just a lid on it.
He used to enjoy scaring folks by throwing lit matches in it.
Not sure if the oily residue is the best lube for guns, though.
I use mineral spirits and a good gun oil or ATF.

FWIW, I've been giving my various handguns a swim in a pail of clean kero (I get it @ a local Hess gas station) w/o issue for going on 30 years now, after removing any grips & magazine (if I'm cleaning an autoloader) - which I dip/swirl separately (magazines).

The great thing about kero is that not only does it quickly dissolve any crud, it penetrates into all those "hard-to-get-to nooks & crannies, while leaving behind a nice oily residue after evaporation.

I just wipe down exterior surfaces with an oily cloth, and my guns have been good to go until whenever my next shooting session may be.

It doesn't seem to remove any copper/lead bore fouling, though............. (which hasn't been an issue for my rimfires).
