I chose my .17 HMR...

After deliberating on the barrel, trigger and stock, not to mention pricetag, I chose the Marlin 917V for my .17 HMR. The trigger was decent to begin with, but after polishing the sear and working the trigger spring a little, its amazing now. I put a Simmons 3-9 × 32mm scope on it from my .22 and I was able to get awesome groups at 100 yards. Next week I look to get a nice scope that has a 20x magnification so I can really reach out and touch a squirrel. The only thing I want to ndo to is find someone to checker or stipple the grip and forestock.

YEP what He said.Mine is a groundhog killln fool 150yrds pop & Floop Armadillas dont fair well either. the wind does mess with after 150yrds but not that bad.I have the BSA sweet 17 on mine works good

This is the second mention I have heard on Shooting Armadillos. I did not know they were hunted, I have actually never even seen one. Are they edible? Anyway to the point, 17 HMR is one of my favorite rounds for Vermin and general plinking. I was thinking of getting one of the Marlins bolt guns in that flavor, has your proven to be accurate?

Kd7sgm Armadillos in the south are vermin they dig holes & destroy gardens I guess you could eat them I dont know anyone that does. But as far as the MARLIN bolt gun goes its a fine rifle for the money. Mines a MOD 17v & on a still day you can hit golf balls @ 150yrds. all day.So yes it is plenty accurate for me.Groundhogs & Armadillos hate them:D:D

17hmr

I first doubted the 17 accuracy and vermin killing potential till I said to myself that I dont own one so dont knock till you try it. Besides if no good can always flog it. Bought a Savage bolt with accutrigger, bull barrel and synthetic stock. Put sweet 17 on it and sighted at 100. After some adjustments a dime was covering the groups. Now for the real test "prairie dogs" WOW what devastation! I'm sold on the Savage 17hmr

That's a nice group (of three ?), but....

I'd like to see a group of five, not three, and shoot several on the same target so we can see what's happening with five or ten groups.

I'm not knocking you, just being realistic. I tried a slew of .17's, and some of the best made with scopes that were all outstanding like Burris Signature select 8-32x, Elite 4200 8-32x & 6-24x, Nikon 6-18x, & Pentax. The rifles I tried were top echelon as well, Anschutz 1517 MPR with resonance adjuster, 2 Ruger 77/17's with Clark and Shilen barrels and custom work, Savage heavy barrel with a custom stock and trigger, Remington 504 and 504-T with the match spec chambering, and a Remington 597 heavy barrel (that is a hoot).
The only "budget" rifle I had was the Savage that I got to see what the HMR was all about. I ended up doing a custom stock and a new trigger before I was happy with it.

In order here:
Remington 504 w/Nikon 6-18x
Anschutz 1517 MPR w/Elite 4200 8-32x
Reminton 504-T w/Elite 4200 6-24x
Savage Varmint barrel with custom stock and trigger w/Burris Signature Select 8-32x
Remington 597 w/Pentax fixed 4.5-14x

I purchased every different ammo type I could lay my hands on through several online sources and ended up with 14 different ones. I then took every rifle two or three at a time and shot every type of ammo through each one. It was amazing the variations between ammo type, my Anschutz shot over two inch groups with the FMJ 20gr while it shot 1/4 to 1/2 with Winchester and Remington premiums.

That's why I ask for a true representation of several groups of five on the same target, the HMR's simply aren't capable of shooting the same hole consistantly. I'd have to admit to being really frustrated by seeing three or four touching and then a flyer a 1/4 inch out from the group, still a very respectable half inch group to be sure, but not one hole.

Not trying to bust your chops, I'd out of curiousity like to see a five or ten group cross section of what your rifle shoots like, also which ammunition were you using? I can put together a 3 shot one hole group after trying a few times, but that isn't how the rifle (and ammo) really shoots which is what interests me. Ammo can vary a group size in the same rifle by as much as a three inch group to well under an inch.

You lucked out with rifle and ammo combo, that's for sure. These are the funnest little ground squirrel rifles you could ask for.

Tip: Don't shoot them in the stomach if you have to pick them up, it's ugly. :)

My wife was ready to have me certified after I got something like seven HMR's and another seven or eight higher end .22's all at the same two or three month period, I got 16 scopes from a wholesaler that came to somewhere around $4000, I was only paying about $350 for the Elite 4200's. I ran out of room in my gun safe or she never would have known there was a serious influx of rifles. When she saw rifles laid out on my pool table she asked why they weren't in the safe, she knew the safe holds 18 rifles so that was the giveaway when I said it's full.

That was the smallest group I shot. The other four POA I shot at ranged from 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch. I was shooting CCI TNT 17 gr HPs. I really need to find a longer range to really try some accuracy shots. Still, I am very happy with my Marlin.

When I lived in Shreveport I hunted Armadillos in the swamps outside of town. I dropped off two and three of them to a guy who lived in a shack with 8 kids, he said they tasted great and have about 8 or so types of meat like a turtle. He cooked the different cuts differently depending on what it was like. They were not easy to get when they are the wild ones that aren't used to people. Anyone who's hunted wilder ones know it's a moving target that busts through brush you can't shoot through or follow them.

Armadillos not only dig holes a cow or horses can break their legs in, they carry leprosy. They can be eaten. Havn't you ever heard of a Hoover Hog?

The above has been my experience also, need someone to produce match ammo to find the true accuracy of the 17. I have a Savage 93-17BTV consistent .750 or less at 100 yards normally 4 rounds touching .350 then the 5th opens to .750, trigger is excellent stock bedding same, I've weighted rounds tried various brands, Hornady 20gr seems the best.

I like the 17 but would not give up my 204 or 223 for it, I find reloading works in the accuracy dept.;)

Great choice! I have the 917 VS CF with a trigger job. I put Cabela's caliber specific 3 to 9 on it and it kicks butt. It does like CCI loads best but Hornady are a very close second.

If you shoot a 5 shot group, shoot them very slow. If you shoo them fast, the barrel may heat up and throw the 5th shot.
