I came milliseconds from my hammer falling....

Nothin like a little late night adrenalyn.....
Bout 9:30pm, 10 or 12 shots rang out just a couple hundred yards west. (Fast semiauto rifle, not a .223) I went straight out the front door, not a sound or sight, just a vehicle close to a mile off, traveling away. Oh well, not a rare occurance out here.

Later, cars started slowing down as they passed, guess it didn't soak in. I later discovered a roadblock out front, after.....

A car pulls up our driveway, stops under the streetlight for a minute or two. I started out to see who the hell it was at 10pm, they didn't see me but continued on, past the barn. They went all the way to the end of the plowed field on the east edge of our property (maybe another 250 yards past the barn), killed the engine and shut off the lights. Hmmmmm. Hopped in my truck and headed out to see WTF. They had just turned the corner at the end of the field before they stopped, so I stopped with my high beams on the side of their car maybe 20-30 yards away. They just sat there 3-5 minutes. Every once in a while the driver would look my direction. I got kinda bored with the game, honked my horn. The driver gets out and walks around to the far side of the car, then a passenger gets out. Then another guy gets outta the back seat. Ok, only three of'em, I got 8 shots on tap. **Mental note to self: "Front sight, PREEEEESSSS. Target aquesition on recoil, PREEESSSS."** They started toward my truck, I unholstered my weapon. As they approached, I opened the door and stood behind it, watching everyone's hands. They stopped 4-5 feet in front of my truck. I asked if they'd gotten stuck, they said "no". I asked what the hell they were doing back here, one took a step toward me & mumbled something, one started toward the passenger side of my truck. I took a two-handed grip on my weapon and said "That's far enough pal", as he got even with the front passenger quarterpanel. The one closest to me stopped, the other one kept walking, towards the darkness. (Right about now is when the sheriff says "Oh man, they were up to no good".) I leveled a bead on his chest and said "STOP!", finger on trigger. Either the idiot didn't know what STOP! meant, or they had a plan. I had a plan too. I took up trigger slack as one of the other guys said something to the one that was about to die, and he did indeed stop. I felt the hammer settle as I released pressure from the trigger. (I told the sherrif that they would have surrounded me if I hadn't stuck my gun in their face. He said "You got THAT right, LOL") They regrouped in front of the truck, but really didn't seem intimidated. (This is when it gets scarey. These idiots are staring straight down a big bore barrel, and it doesn't phase them.) I told them that they were trespassing, and needed to be on their way before the sheriff got here. (Little did I know at that time, the street just west of my house was crawling with units.) They looked each other over, him-hawed a little, and said, "Ok, we'll go". I remained at the ready until their vehicle was on it's way. It went towards my neighbor's house. I went inside and gave Tony a call. He asked if I knew what was going on out front. Me:"Out FRONT?? I just about had to shoot a couple of idiots out BACK a few minutes ago. They left headed towards YOUR house." Tony:"Geeze, why do you always run'em toward MY house, LOL.". Anyways, he told me about the roadblock. He'd gone out to see WTF, but didn't know/find out anything. I told him about the gunshots earlier, he hadn't heard them. Ok, I decided to go out & tell the sherrif what just happened out back. About halfway through telling him my story, he called for another unit to come over, and asked if I still had my weapon. "Sure" He said he didn't blame me, but asked me to expose it because they were sending a new guy out to handle the orchard call. (Rookies ALWAYS get the "orchard calls", lol) Sherrif: "Oh, a Sig. We gotta carry THESE crappy things." Anyways, we all took about a mile long hike all the way out to the canal south of here. They'd made a clean getaway :( Had an interesting chat with the guys on the way there & back. Lotta stuff goes on out here I didn't have a clue about.

After reflecting on the incident (and decribing it to mom), I realized that it all came down to training. Aside from the initial contemplation of ammo supply (and kicking myself for not having picked up the double mag pouch that was laying next to my gun), it was 100% auto-pilot. The color codes flashed just like clockwork. Ok, being alone out there, I was at LEAST bright yellow/tinge of orange as they approached. That clicked to orange as they closed the gap from 12' to 5' (maybe a tad late for that change, but I WAS behind cover). When the guy closest to me took another step, I was teetering on red, but not quite yet. One more step after I told him "that's far enough" would have brought the sights to bear on him, as he would have been in range to kick my door then. I already knew that I'd be taking a step back if he continued. What flashed the condition to bright red was the other guy headed for darkeness and my flank. No conscious thought at all, STOP!! Front sight-prreeessss. I was quite amazed that not only did my non-firing eye close, but I was indeed focused ON the front sight. I had to consciously force my nondominant eye open, as it had cut off my periphrial of the guy closest to me. They were close enough that I didn't have a problem watching BOTH sets of hands. There's been a lot discussed here about "fight or flight", adrenalyn, and freezing up. I didn't feel the adrenalyn until they were back in their car, but it was indeed present the whole time. I can say with absolute certainty they would have had me if not for the dozen or more courses I've attended. (Thanx Dr. Piazza, from my wife, our 5 y/o daughter, and my mother.)

Now then. The sherrifs officers all said that I did everything right, they had no problem with any of my actions. Well, except the one little detail that they would have liked to have handled it themselves. Yeah, me too. Obviously the guys had some reason that they didn't wanna go through the roadblock, surely someone would have went to jail. As it is, nobody will ever know.

Newsflash: Man shot 3 times, dies in hospital last night. Happened in the little $hithole three miles up the road from here. That's why they were so concerned about the shots out here.

The few times that I've had to check on a suspicious vehicle, it's turned out to be a couple just trying to find some privacy. Never know what kinda people you'll run into in a dark orchard at night though.....

The Bible is my lawbook. I turn the other cheek when applicable, and spend the rest of my days resisting evil at every front, until I have breathed my last breath.

The one thing would be call 911 before you went out just to cover yourself. However, I have disregarded my own advice so I`m not one to talk.

Since you`re in the sticks so to speak, why not get a scanner for cases like this. Forewarned is, well you know. :D

Glad your OK. Seems like a rifle is in order if you live in the country. Your pistol is good defense, but against three armed thugs it's better to have an AR.

damn man....take a shotgun with you as well as the SIG. glad yer ok..glad you didn't have to cap someone.

"These idiots are staring straight down a big bore barrel, and it doesn't phase them.)

Hmm, they probably assumed you were too nice a guy to shoot em :), maybe you should get a couple tattoos and piercings to rectify that.

Seriously though, thats pretty scary situation, having three guys acting casual when your gun is drawn, thinking to yourself " I'm ACTUALLY going to have to shoot this idiot ! Please don't make me shoot you", I know that feeling, it sucks.

glad you walked out of that one without being hurt or having to fire a shot.

now one question for you, at the time did the Sig feel like it was big enough or were you wishing it was a bigger gun?

Close one.
I am glad to see you had the resolve to back up the draw.
Just point the weapon doesnt make bad guys stop.
Good job.
And yes - next time - bring more firepower.

dinosaur: Yeah, got the scanner, used to listen to it almost 24/7. Kinda burnt out on it I guess.

Tecolote: Yup, I'da felt better with my hicap .223, once I got there. Hindsight is 20/20

Satanta: Now THAT's what I'd rather had. Unfortunately, my short barrel pump spends most of it's time in the safe since I can't keep my eye on it all of the time with kids around :( Nobody any glader than me that it didn't take that creep another milisecond to stop, it really was that close.

MTAA: That thought crossed my mind, for an instant. I think that's what freezes people up in that kind of situation. My triggers were set, cruise control took over. (TG)

4V50 Gary: Oh now I LIKE that :D Actually, not far from reality around here, coyotes are pretty thick.

guerilla1138: Yeah, me too.
I was perfectly confident with the .40S&W. Don't wanna start another caliber war here, but a 9mm wouldn't have felt real good right then. The P239 only has a 7+1 capacity, that was a major concern. If I'd had my magpouch, I'da been ready to perform a "false emergency reload" at the first opportunity after 3 or 4 rounds. You *know* that you lose count.

Goerge Hill: It REALLY wasn't a conscious decision. Once I realized I was in deep doo-doo, the "line was crossed", the "mental trigger" was tripped. I'm suprised the hammer didn't fall even after he stopped. It was that close.
And yes, DEFINITELY more firepower, LOL.

Thanx for the responses. I *know* it's probably pretty stupid to check these situations without backup. This incident might just change my mind about doing so. (without the shotgun, at least)

:D This sounds like a FUD file!! :D

Actually, I'm glad you're arlight. But I'd personally like to learn a few things. Mainly, whereabouts are you located? Secondly.. where is your long arm? I most certainly would have had a rifle/shotgun on me (at all times) if I lived in territory as you are describing. However, bein' a "redneck" in the city only affords me a concealed firearm at the moment. *ick*

Glad you're doing well. Two add to this post a little.. I think it is amazing the amount of control (or lack of) that you can have and not know it. I averted a car-jacking in downtown Atlanta and I noticed two things. After I managed to escape the incident I noticed two "scary" things. First, I had a X&X Model 18 with a target hammer and trigger. (.38 special) During the course of my encounter, I had thumb-cocked my revolver. Most people would say "So what?" Well, the trigger pull on this particular revolver is well under 2lbs EASY. I didn't notice it, but after I had left the scene (in my car) I noticed that my finger was on the trigger. Its no wonder I had not shot myself after driving my car (stick shift) with the had that still had the gun in it and my finger still on the trigger. Second to that, the rush I had aquired quickly caught up with me as I was about a block away. I was shaken up pretty badly and hardly in any shape to continue driving...

KaMaKaZe: Let's just say "a permit friendly Northern Kalifornia County" :D

Problem here is, no more rifle racks :( Yup, even unloaded, even locked, you mustn't be able to access the longarms while seated in the passenger compartment. It bites. Private property is ok, but I've gotten outta the habit of carrying them.

Yeah, trigger pull. That's what scares me about 1911's. When I pointed in, I'm SURE there was 6 or 8 pounds applied as my finger found the trigger, and I hadn't made the conscious decision to shoot yet. I figgered it'd be that way in a situation like this.

Not wanting to start a war of another breed, I'm sure that most guys who live by their single actions have a much lighter touch than us long hard pull guys. Not having a touchy trigger on my carry weapon was a conscious decision on my part, I could see the possibility of a PD ruining my day. (Or life)

Fastforty, I live in the country too, and I can't say that I agree with your actions. No flames here, but going out of your house (or at least off your land) to check on a suspicious vehicle could make you an "aggressor" in a court case. At that point, you weren't defending yourself, you were aggressing. Also, since shots had already rang out, calling 911 and getting to the safest area of my home would be on my top 2 list, and running "straight out the front door" after shots have been fired is a good way to become a target. Concerning engaging these three men...how do you know that they weren't armed? If you had engaged one target, the other two could have had you in a heartbeat if they wanted to...they were way too close. Also, a car door is no protection from bullets at all...of course by this time in the incident, the only thing that could have saved your bacon if TSHTF was to hit reverse in the truck and backed away real fast. Getting out gave you a disadvantage, as you could not retreat very efficiently. Last thing...If these men had not been caught, don't you think they'd cruise throught the neighborhood again, looking for the house with your truck in the driveway? This leads bad guys right to your house. Then they have a serious advantage. A ten year old can get into most people's houses undetected in about 30 seconds. Wouldn't that be an awful surprise to come home to someone waiting for you in the bathroom? Very uncool. I'm only saying this because I once "pulled a stunt" like this, and was almost followed to my house. Scared me and my wife to death.

I'm glad you didn't have to shoot. When you said 8 rounds, I was hoping it was .30-06 in a Garand. I would have been way too scared to investigate this one. What was your plan if they produced that semiauto rifle and opened up on your truck?

Remember gang. Hindsight is always 20/20. ;)

Frontsight,
I do not take issue with any of your truly valid points. The sad fact is, that even though Fastforty made some "tactical" errors, his actions typify what a TRUE AMERICAN used to be. There was a problem on HIS property, so he felt that it was HIS responsibility to deal with it. He did not cower in his home, asking someone else to put their life on the line for him. Americans used to be independent, and self reliant. The laws have made us a bunch of wimps, afraid to defend what is ours.

Fastforty,
You can now buy "instant access" safes for long guns. They mount flush between your wall studs, giving you access to a loaded long gun in less then 2 seconds. One near your back door would be real handy. Glad you made it out of there alive, and without having to take a life.

My only question would have been, "what would have made a bigger mess in these punk's pants - high capacity short barreled shotgun, "evil black rifle", or AK-47.

Fastforty,

Very glad you didn't become a statistic in some record book. Scarry stuff and I applaud your courage! I think I would have shot him when he failed to stop on the first warning and the second. Now that's trigger control.

Next time, bring a 12ga. with 00 in it and leave the .40 for backup! Other than that I'd like to say thanks for showing us that there are still real Americans out there!

... But as for me, give me liberty or give me death!

Get yourself one of those portable 1/2 or million power spotlights next time you have to go venture into the orchard. Make sure you ruin their night vision before you engage them!

OK! I APOLOGIZE! I must admit, I honestly missed something in Fastforty's description, and I honestly thought the guy was down the road...not on his land at all. That's the part I missed. Sorry! On my land? You betcha! I'd go too, but sneakier, I think. A neighbor would've been called, too, before I stepped out. That neighbor could provide unseen protection for me, when engagement was inevitable. That million power spotlight is a great idea, and I actually have one charged up next to my back door. Sorry, Fastforty, I really thought that you were out in the street on this one. Good on you for defending your own land. Many safes are available with an electronic keypad vice a dial. I went witht the keypad, and I'm really happy I did. I can be in my safe in less than 10 seconds.

So you're out on your land. You're on a 4-wheeler, your truck, or a mule for that matter. What do you have for a longarm? 12 gauge pump w/ 8 rounds 00 buck, 12 gauge semiauto w/ 8 rounds 00 buck, or and AR-15 w/ 30 rounds .223?
