I am having questions re: S&W 4053

Regular 8-shot 4053, not the 9-shot TSW version. Saw one at a show. In very good shape, presumably used since judging from the date stamp on the nite sites it was made in 1996. I like the slim profile, and would like to add a DAO to the family.

And now, my questions for you kind folk: is this one of the S&W autos that were OK, or one of the sucky ones? Or does it start out OK, and get worse over time, i.e., get too loose too quick, or other premature malfunctions.

There shouldn't be much concern with that one. The *s have one of the best DAO pulls out there. They also can be fitted with the manual safety lever, should you ever decide that would be desirable. If the price is good, I would not hesitate on it. :)
 
I like mine. It has a good trigger, nice and smooth. Slim profile, carries well in my Kramer IWB #2. Adequate firepower and capacity for CCW. If it feels good , buy it.

MOST (not ALL, as it is possible to get a lemon in every patch) third generation S&W autos are very well made with few to no problems with them. I do not own the DAO model, but I do have the 4013 (the traditional DA/SA version of the model that you are interested in) and I've been very happy with it -- it is accurate and has functioned flawlessly.

Hmmmm...so far, so good....is the magazine catch reversible?

Yes, I am a lefty and no, I'm not gonna just use my left forefinger to press the release.

They're OK, but they tend to be a bit ammo sensitive. Make sure you check the slide rails, especially aound the front of the frame. Some SW 40s can experience execssive frame battery.
