Last week there was a funeral for a solder that gave his life for his country.
He chose to go over. He chose to serve his country.
And he paid the ultimate sacrifice for his country.
And we have lost another GREAT American.
You may wonder why I am ashamed to be from Indiana.
There were anti-war protesters across the street from the cemetery holding signs against the war. There were Indiana state police standing less than 5 feet from the protesters and they did nothing.
The mother of this GREAT American could see these protester as they lowered her son into the ground.
These are the same pieces of crap that this GREAT American gave his life for so that they had free speech.
It’s just too bad some one didn’t kick the life out of those coward low lives.
God bless the USA and the GREAT men and women that protect our existence.
And I spit on the scum that protested this poor family last time with there son.

So sad that their mothers didn't raise them right. Hard for me to believe they grew up with no manners at all.

+1 for me---but unfortunately these protests are happening in many states---so don't be too hard on Indiana. Did you ever notice that these "protesters" seem to have nothing else to do. School, work don't seem to exist thus they have nothing but wasted free time to do protests. Since this particular protest seems to have happened in an inappropriate place, a lack of intelligence has to factor in.

Be ashamed for the protesters, Indiana had nothing to do with it. Part of why he was a soldier was to protect the right of those protesters to protest. I came back to similar things back in 1969. The cost of our freedoms isn't borne only by the military.

Lets see; An American soldier goes to war, gets killed and is laid to rest in his hometown. He did this because he believed it his duty to protect all Americans.

Now, during his funeral some people show up and exercise the rights that the soldier died for. They say; "See, war is bad. We shouldn't engage in war."

And some now condemn these people for doing what they have a right to do even if doing so was in bad taste.

I'm wondering who is it exactly that is in the wrong here. I'm also wondering WHY this sort of thing continues to get posted on a forum where we all recognize that freedom of speech is a god given right to everyone in this country. Even if you don't like what the guy is saying, we all know that you can't say that he's a bad person for it.

I'm wondering why people push this button knowing that SOMEONE will respond with testosterone-linked commentary.

I'm wondering if anyone REALLY cares.

well perhaps some feel that freedom of speach is relative and should be primarily only reserved for those they agree with?

The sooner this war is over the better. Bush should send his daughters to die in the sands over there. I am in favour of a law, that any politician who starts a war...should have to send his family to fight it first....

and not just reserve death for the patriots...or for the poor.

Nothing but scum

+1, Ozzieman. It may be "legal" for these lowlifes to protest across the street from the funeral, but that sure as hell does not make it ethical.

I am 100% in favor of free speech. I am also 100% in favor of letting families of soldiers bury their dead in peace. A soldier's funeral is not the time or place to picket, protest or make a political statement.

Anyone who refuses to let a family bury their dead without picketing or protesting within sight or sound of the gravesite is nothing but scum. Such tactics reveals the true nature of their caracter; we have come to expect acts such as this from leftist/liberal/socialist scumbags.

Geez, can't figure this tough 1 out huh? You were half way there. NOBODY is condemning them for the right they have, they are being condemned for the time and place. Say pretty much anything you want---in return I have the right to call you a moron for the things you say---my given right as well!
So to sum it---you think it's ok to protest any time anywhere for your cause but if you are protested(mocked) in return then it's condemnation?
BTW, try spending your protest time getting better educated or dare I say a job!

As one of the resident leftist/liberal/socialists on this board, who's ardently against our current conflict, and encourages protests I have to say there's a time and a place for it.

And the solider's funeral, regardless of why he was there, isn't it.

Please don't lump in those particular sort of scumbags with those of us who are just your average, run of the mill "leftist/liberal/socialist scumbags," as most of us have a sense of perspective, just like the goodly, God fearin' Christians who hate abortions know that you're not supposed to bomb clinics.

Seriously, every side has it jackholes. Yours, ours, and even the ones we both agree suck.

While I agree with your comment 100%---the caveat I would point out is that there appears to be alot more "fanatics" on the left compared to the right, but a fanatic on either side is indeed a scumbag!

What they did was a direct assault on a grieving family. They are wrong and so are you. By your logic you would have supported the Klan picketing Rosa Parks' funeral.

I see that Rev. Fred Phelps of the Topeka, Kansas Westboro Baptist Church and his minions are at it again.

While he still targets gays, his new agenda is to call the war, and all who engage in it, traitors to the American Ideal. His latest tactics are to demonstrate at funerals of our G.I.s and denigrate them and the war. His group of followers are targeting people all over the midwest.

See here and here to get the idea.

Now thats just so wrong......and the ultimate way to display your a jerk and idiot protesting at a soldier's funeral.

If you feel strongly about the war go protest against the politicians not the soldiers. Dont protest at military hospitals of funerals. Thats just a total lack of character.

There is the right to free speech and then there is respect for other people in bad times and adversity. Freedom of speech is also knowing when to keep your mouth shut out of respect for people during a bad time.

That's just sick. A funeral is certainly not the right time or place to protest the war. Leave the grieving family alone.

Last I checked this is America. The protestors have the right of free speech. If I were the cop though I would have violated their rights and smacked them in their head with a shovel.

This was like spitting in the soldiers grave.

For Rob P . . .

I have read your post several times and decided to respond to it, notwithstanding my conviction that you are intentionally provoking members of the TFL Community, which is clearly prohibited (see Rule #3 re “trolling”).

I will begin by asking a few highly-germane questions: (1) are you a parent?, (2) have you ever served in the military?, and (3) have you ever lost a dear friend or loved one in combat? I pose these questions not because meeting any of these criteria causes one’s opinions to be more-valid, but rather because the callousness of your position might well be altered if your child was being interred after dying in action, and/or if you had served honorably and understood the ethics of self-sacrifice and brotherhood that dominate military service, and/or even if you had to bury a close friend while protesters – however purely they perceive their own motives – denigrate his funeral.

Whether you want to believe it – or are mature and experienced enough to understand it – this type of protest is both ghoulish and entirely inappropriate. The fact that these demonstrators have the right to do so – and that those of us with extended and distinguished military service have fought and sacrificed to uphold that right – does NOT make it suitable for them to do so.

I support freedom of speech. However, protesting at the burial of a fallen warrior – like demonstrating in from of Walter Reed Army Hospital – is unacceptable because it hurts the soldier and/or his family, and they have NOTHING to do with the national security policies that determine our combat involvement in Southwest Asia.

My vehemence regarding this subject directly results from experiences as a young officer during the Vietnam War. Like many others – including several esteemed TFL members – I was spat upon and maligned by our fellow citizens and in major US cities like Philadelphia and Chicago. What should have been obvious to those jackass protesters, was that NO ONE IN UNIFORM – EVEN AT THE FOUR-STAR GENERAL/FLAG OFFICER LEVEL – MAKES THESE DECISIONS OR ESTABLISHES THESE POLICES. That is the exclusive prerogative of our civilian political leadership: elected and appointed, in the legislative and executive branches of the Federal government.

Thanks to Antipitas, I see that our original post seems to have stemmed from the folks over at Westboro Baptist, who I assure you are anything but liberal/leftist/socialist scumbags, but can most certainly be lumped under both the "scumbag" and "fanatic" headings.

On behalf of the the liberal/leftist/socialist scumbag fantatics everywhere, I humbly accept the apology not offered for instantly accusing us for everything. ;)

That said, I see in addition to "godhatesfags.com," they're now running "godhatesamerica.com," including the rather, uhm, spirited qoutes "Pray for more dead bodies floating on the fag-semen-rancid waters of New Orleans" and the one I think which'll be a far bigger hit, here, "Pray for more American bodies blown to smithereens by cheap home made Iraqi IEDs..."

More fanatics on the left? If so, we hardly make up for the vehemence and fire and brimstone fervor of the right, but that's OK. I'm willing to concede they're all jackholes.

I don't see how Indiana fits into this.

The police were doing what they are supposed to do, which is keep the peace. As awful as it is, those people have the right to protest on public grounds, the same way that the KKK can hold marches and NAMBLA can hold confrences.

And I think that if an officer would have violated their rights with a shovel upside the head, we would all be screaming 'US v. Them' and 'militarization of the police' and whatever cliches there are.

Again, the lie that the liberal/left "hates the war but supports the troops" is made crystal clear. They hate the troops too, just like when they spit on the soldiers returning from Vietnam, they spit on the fallen heros returning from the War on Terror.
