Hypothetical concealed carry question in Maryland without a concealed carry license

Getting a Concealed Carry License in Maryland is close to impossible to get from all I have read. Assuming one ignores the law and finds him or her self one day in a dark alley with a drug induced crazed maniac intent to cause great physical harm, and then kills the maniac (with gun shot) in self defense, what will likely be the final legal outcome to the person who defended them self...besides living to see another day?

Has something like this ever happened?

Probably, and the outcome, while not good, is better than being killed.

Size up the situation. If you think there's a good possibility that the goblin is not just going to rob you, but is going to kill you as well, take action. Otherwise, hand over your wallet and then RUN. For most street criminals, other than getting a real job, there's nothing harder than hitting a moving target.

I recall reading something about being allowed to carry a weapon if there was a reasonable suspicion of danger. However, I think that this exception applies to rifles/shotguns and not to handguns. Since I am working from memory and I am not a lawyer I may be doubly wrong. In fact I'd be interested in knowing the right answer myself.

This said, I know people that carry without a license when they have to visit, e.g. for work-related reasons, dangerous areas of the city. I have never done that but I cannot blame them. I am sure that this happens a lot and that occasionally some of them end up using their handgun.

Just because you CAN be prosecuted for something doesn't mean you will. If you just get caught with a gun in a place where a permit is required plan on getting caught. I live in a lienient state but they will prosecute you. But, I've read numerous stories about some old lady somewhere whipping out a gun from her purse and blowing away a perp and being lauded as a hero with no prosecution of any kind. It's pretty much carry at your own risk.

Count on being arrested, prosecuted, convicted and going to jail. If anything less happens then consider yourself lucky.
