Husband Wants a Scope -- Recommendations

My husband has asked for a scope for his birthday next month to go on his CAR-25 (I think). He specifies that should have up to 3 or 4 X magnification, fit to flat top, and "Pictanny Rail". Honestly, I have no idea what all that means and don't really want to spend tons of time learning about scopes.

The way I see it, I can order one for him, or send him up to Cabelas with a couple hundred dollars. I think he'd be happy either way.

Do you all have any recommendations on scopes I should look at, and an idea of the price range for a decent scope? Thanks!

Have you thought about asking him to pick a couple off of an internet sight? One can usually find a better deal that way and the choices are much more plentiful. I got a scope for Christmas that went right back. I wish I could have gotten cash instead of store credit so I could buy the better price off the internet.

not sure what you're looking to spend.

does he want something illuminated?

this is what i would go with(just did as a matter of fact)....

thats with a high quality mount, the scope alone runs in the $500's.

you can get something decent for a couple hundred(maybe a Burris or lower end Leupold),all the way up to a couple grand for top of the line.

i went with the Amber illumination on the Trijicon, but alot of people prefer red.

i think the Amber is better all arround and for dark backgrounds/low light, where the red is better against light backgrounds with bright lighting...from what little experimenting ive done.

Jermtheory has a good one.

Another option: Buy him the cheapest one on this page:

http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Categories.bok?category=Optic+and+Mount+Combos%3ATrijicon

specifically this one:

http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=204

Has all of the requirements:
1) fits picatinney rail
2) 3 - 9 power
3) very decent scope
4) best mount on the market
5) you don't have to look around for scope + mounts to match

Of course, you could also just buy him this scope mount and pick up a $100 scope at Cabelas. ;)

If you do that, pick 1" rings for the mount. Usually scopes have 1" tubes so you want to pick the scope before you pick the mount.

More scope mounts for picatinney rails:

There are probably cheaper mounts out there. Google "Picatinney Mounts".

Here is one:

Not sure if I like the two piece ones though. I would stay with the one piece mount.

same thing i recommended,just a different size...

she said up to 3x-4x no?

3x9 doesnt seem like a good fit on a semi-auto carbine imo.

agreed on the one piece...cant go wrong with the Larue.

If you decide on Leupold, for a little bit more you can have their Custom Shop engrave his name and initials on the scope.

I haven't tried it yet, but always thought it would make a great gift.
