hunting

JW,
I don't know the area numbers but I am guessing it is close to you... I am going to be entering Eglin from US331 south of "The-Fun-We-Lack springs" (defuniak). It looks real nice on the sat pics. The alaqua river is right there and I have high ground with scrub, oak, pine and persimmon and heading west I get lower land heading to real thick hammocks and bottoms. I hope to poke a hole in a few hogs and deer.

If you want to get together, let me know.

ok

yea area 3 is at the bottom of the map by hw98. I hunted there last year and saw some good does and one really nice 8 point. it is bow only. I have found some really good oak stands and have waited to hunt them. It is a pretty nice area up by the river.

I can't find my map.
Area 3 is the one that runs between the southern board of Eglin, and the main bombing range, isn't it? Between Navarre and Mary Esther? (Except for a few spots that are attached to other areas.)

It sounds a bit counter-intuitive, but your best bet might be to stay close to the houses. (Or highway, depending upon which part of the unit you're in.) When I was there, that area had more deer running around the woods near the houses, than farther in.

One reason for the above phenomenon, and something to look out for:
That area doesn't have very many water sources, and half of what is there is seasonal. If you can, push a little farther west, toward Holley. Just watch out for the poachers.

In that area, I saw the most deer between the power line road (southern board of the 'closed' area) and Hwy 87, around Dean Creek, between Holley and the Landfill.

Oh... If you haven't been out there before - don't believe the map Jackson Guard gives out. Many of those "roads" are not passable in a vehicle. Many are even difficult on an ATV. A few near Choctaw Airfield (Aux field 6, I think) are actually passable by jet ski.

yea

I have been there and it is at the southern side near hw98. I hunt near the houses and there are a lot of deer there. I am thinking about going near the river and walking. If you come in from 98 and go straight you can cross it and then it gets bad. If you find your map you can follow that road over the creek that is where it is. I have walked there and have seen many tracks but havent hunted it you I am waiting for the rut.
