Going to try some new hand loaded long colt+p ammo out this week end. Found some from a very reputable ammo dealer at a local gun show. They are loaded with 250 gr Hornady XTP and are moving at 1200 FPS. I thank this will work well on deer at around 30yds. or so, and before you ask yes it is being shot out of a new model blackhawk. What do you all think?

Equivalent to .44 Magnum

And will do for whitetail at much more than 30 yards, if you are a good enough shot. You may not care for the recoil though!

I shot that level of ammo for years, but settled on a lighter load ~1100fps for general use. Seems as effective, and the recoil is noticeably less. And I use the oversize Pachmyr grips!

The 45 colt is an under appreciated cartage, and should easily handle white tail at that range. When you compare what the ballistics of a black power 45 round ball or even the 44 henry, your load is way better even from the revolver. JMHO : Bill

I shot my first handgun deer with a .45LC BH in 1976 using a Hornady 250 HP - a far different bullet than the excellent XTP. The 250 XTP at 1100-1200 will be great on deet out to at least 100 yards if placed well. Practice with the load until you are confident you can hit a pie plate at 30 yards. You'd be surprised at how easy it is to miss even at that range.....
