Hunting on your own land for free??

I was told today at our Sunday morning trap shoot that here in New York you can hunt on your own land without a license. You still must obey the D.E.C. season regulations. This came up after a fellow shooter read in our local paper that N.Y. is raising all hunting and fishing license fees a substantial amount for the '09 - '10 season. He is confident he can hunt on his own property without a N.Y. hunting license. Does anyone know the rules about this?
Thanks
E.

Here in the Bikini state we must have a license for game animals on our own land. Hogs no, but other non-game or vermin it depends...

ohio you dont need a license to hunt your own land.
and you can take deer with a "land owners permit" if you got enough property.

In NC you can get 'nuisance deer' permits out of season if they are destroying your crops. One of my neighbors up there gets them when they get to digging up his sweet potatoes. Nothing beats a little pre-season hunt on deer fattened up on sweet potatoes.

E.J.W.: Unless they have changed something drastically in the last year or two, then no, that is not entirely true.

Only FARMERS can hunt w/o a license, on their own WORKING FARMS, and ONLY SMALL GAME.

And Native Americans.

Here's the NYS hunting rules website: http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/08hunttrap.pdf

Go to page 14 of the book:

Small Game License Exceptions
All residents must have a valid hunting license in their possession except:
• Resident owners primarily engaged in farming, lessees and members of their
immediate families do not need a small game hunting license when hunting
on farm lands they are occupying and cultivating.

• Native Americans living on a reservation do not need a hunting license while hunting on reservation lands.

No excepions for Turkeys & Big Game:
*Turkey tags are included with the purchase of a Conservation Legacy, Super Sportsman, or Lifetime Sportsman License.
To hunt turkey, all hunters must have a turkey permit. There are no exceptions.

Scrap5000,
Thanks for the info & link.
Yesterday, I witnessed a few other club members confront this gentleman's thoughts to which he responded by removing the huge cigar from his mouth so he could better and louder put down their advances of wisdom.
The middle of the clubhouse while signing up for the next squads to shoot was no time for a heated debate over this and for sure what would of progressed to politics. Thankfully the other members engaged with this man (who turns out, was a guest of another member) also were aware of this and left it to rest.
The last thing we all want is to pay higher prices to do what we enjoy. But if we want the sport of hunting to endure it's something that we will all have to find our own way of dealing with.

PS;
This same man found it necessary to comment on everybody's equipment and shooting style during the Sunday shoot. When he approached me, all I said was "lets compare score sheets" ...that ended that conversation.
I seen our president having a word with the hosting member while I was packing up to leave.

Yep, and you can also hunt your own land without a license during the regular seasons. Still have to abide by season dates unless you get the nuisance permits, but no license required. You have to tag and report the deer, but the tags are free. Also have to have the hunter's safety course, which is also free.

Definitely not true. There are exceptions but so far as Joe Citizen hunting without a license, no, no.... and No.
