Hunting Ammunition Availability

Whilst shopping the local Wal-Mart near my vacation home in the Colorado Rockies, I wandered over to the sporting goods section to see what hunting ammo was in stock. They had app. ten boxes each of .243, .270 Win., .30-06, 7mm mag, and .300 Win Mag, and a few boxes of 7mm-08. There was exactly zero .308 and .30-30. I am posting this for informational purposes only. Hopefully there will be a better selection when hunting season rolls around.

The bass pro and most other guns stores around here are packed full of everything other than 22lr and a few pistol calibers.

I've also had that problem. When places around here have 308 it's always fmj, or other non hunting type bullets. I've got piles of NATO ammo and a lot of premium stuff but getting a box of rem 165gr core-lokt is just about impossible. I even went to the last local gun show trying to find some basic hunting loads, and nothing, I even brought along a box of 180gr black talons I had and the few people with hunting bullets didn't even want to trade.

That was my point. It strikes me as odd that there would be 243 and 7-08 hunting ammunition but none for the parent caliber 308. I get that the 308 is a 'tactical' round, hence a paucity of fmj ammo but I don't understand why there wouldn't be some hunting ammunition available around here.

Here in the Peoples Republic of Commiefornia the hunting ammo availability is even worse than what the OP describes. In the so called "condor zone" lead core bullets are illegal for hunting. It's looking to get worse, as AB 711 is most likely going to become law, thus banning all lead projectiles for use in hunting, statewide.

From now on, for rifle, it will be solid copper like the Barnes or Nosler e-tips for those of us who decide to follow this asinine laws.

I was at Reno Cabela's a month ago

Most hunting loads were in good supply. Anything for milsurps or AR/AK platforms was very scarce. .22 was available if you wanted it in any variety other than LR.
My California WalMart had some .270 hunting ammo and some .25-06 but nothing else.
