- Although the election's over, a Pennsylvania man is still worried about the future plans of some apparent foes of Al Gore.
James Howard Ellenberger, 54, of Mount Pleasant Township, Pa., said he found a severed deer's head with a tag claiming Ku Klux Klan responsibility near his mailbox a few days ago.
Ellenberger said a note declared: "We know where you are and we're watching you, Jim."
He believes the incident was related to his attendance at a local rally for Gore as a member of "Hunters for Gore." At the rally, he spoke to an Associated Press reporter about his withdrawal from the National Rifle Association because he felt NRA leadership distorted Gore's views on gun control.
"He doesn't want to take away our guns," Ellenberger said. He said Gore hoped to stem the flow of assault and automatic weapons onto public streets, not to seize sporting guns with his proposals for stronger gun laws.
Ellenberger said the reporter quoted him and his name and address appeared in local papers Saturday. Consequently, those who opposed his views knew where to find him. The deer head with its tag appeared that afternoon.
Ellenberger turned over the deer head and "nicely printed" hunter's tag to state police.
"They're trying to intimidate me," he said. "I don't know if they're going to come back and do something worse."
Ellenberger said that as he campaigned for Gore, he met people whose zeal for owning guns outpaced their good sense.
"We're hunters but we're for background checks and trigger locks on guns," he said. "That's just being responsible."[/quote]
