Hungarian Hi-Power Clone: FEG FP-9

I have looked at several of these guns and never found one with any kind of a decent trigger. A couple weeks ago a dealer I frequent had one and the trigger was good! Not great, but felt as if it would break in ok with some range use. Century Intl. is the selling wholesaler/distributor where my dealer got this gun and has them priced to dealers for around $200.00.

So I bit. I don't mind paying a bit more since I can inspect before I buy...I bought the FEG. I asked a buddy to take out the magazine release safety (I hate those things)...once it was out...WOW MOM WOW!

The trigger went from good to un-real. I took the gun to the farm and went thru about 200 rounds and found it shot in groups, but high and left 6-8 inches. I can adjust my point of aim to over come this "problem".
One problem, which I cannot adjust, the trigger reset only works 50% of the time!!!
Not good. I was hoping the 200 rounds might get the gun functioning properly...NOPE.
I took the gun back to the shop and I trust the reset issue will be resolved OR I'll have $225 to spend on something else.

Another couple points...
*The gun has a ventilated rib! Kinda different on a semi-auto. I really don't mind the look, just different.
*The bluing is pretty good.
*The frame (inside where the frame/slide fit against each other) is crudely cut and milled...I did not expect it to be great, but be careful, the edges are SHARP and you can cut a finger. Fit is tight but rough...the finish is pretty good.
*The rear sight is real CHEEZY. Not brittle or loose, just kinda dumb looking and narrow enough that using the sights is not so easy. I'd have to find a different rear sight if I plan to keep and shoot the gun...my old eyes do not like the factory sights.
*The magazine release button is pretty stiff/bound up. I think this will wear in but a little smoothing might make this problem go away sooner.
*The grips are plastic and loose...just needs a screwdriver.

Overall...
**Once the magazine release safety has been removed
**AND if the trigger re-set problem can be repaired...
In my opinion, the gun is certainly a KEEPER. I can honestly say that I would not take a free trigger job on this gun...an unreal factory trigger, especially on such a cheap gun! (I would take a free trigger job on my Browning HP!) Beyond that, the other stuff noted can be done (or not done) based upon the user's preferences.

VF,
Sounds like you may have a winner. Question? If the trigger was improved that much by removing the mag disconnect..could that have something to do with your reset problem?
Shoot well

Eric,
I don't know. I hope not! That trigger is too good to be true!
I know they are all inter-related, we'll see!

I've had my FP-9 for a couple of years now and i love it!
Its never-ever failed in any way with any ammo i've tried, and i love that ventilated rib.

I have aPJK-9hp, withthe ventilated rib. I got it used in 1988 (?). It has served me well and is my carry gun. I had the mag safety removed a couple of months ago and WOW MOM WOW, what a difference that made! I haven't had any problems with the reset.

I haven't seen any others with the rib and am curious about yours being a FP-9 and being a HP clone.

Glad you are happy with your new (is it new or new to you?) FEG.

Sounds great!

VF,
A BHP type gun with a light trigger is pretty sweet, huh?

Hopefully the trigger reset problem will get solved - a guy on the FNHiPower board was complaining about a similar problem. The trigger assembly and the especially the trip lever may need to be polished/lubed.

A trigger job on a BHP isn't that hard, if you have the tools around, it is basically free.

My FP-9 looks just like seekers except mine has black plastic grips. The FP-9 is a copy of Brownings GP35 with the addition of the ventilated rib to add to the coolness factor.

Tropical

Browning never made any of the handguns that I know of except the BDM which they promptly discontinued.

Any and all of the HPs work MUCH better without the Mag disconnect.

Update: FEG
I got the gun back today, the trigger is good, but not like it was...Eric may have been correct, perhaps I was expecting to have my cake and eat it to...
Still, the trigger is very good! I expect it to break in as time goes by. A bit more pull than it had after the "fix" but it is fairly nice and crisp.
I do want to get a different rear sight....perhaps it can be drilled and some dot's inserted??
I guess the point of aim is my main "issue"....I wish it was closer to the bull.
I did buy this gun NIB.

I've had my FEG for 9 months now at the same price you paid. I luv mine. Got those S. African 17 rd clips from CDN, they work but are very hard to put the last 4 rounds in. They come with a mag loader, with very good reason. My trigger job was done simply by putting a few drops of teflon on the front top of the magazine. Thats where the magazine safty rubs against the front of the mag. Made a world of difference in the trigger. I owned a Browning HP (many) years ago. Feg compares very well, and at just 1/3 the price of a new HP!

I had one of these guns and really liked it for the price. Dillon sells an adjustable rear sight that will fit in a rear dovetail. See their website. You could have one installed to correct both your POA problem and your dissatisfaction with the factory sight.

Regards.

Ledbetter,
Thanks, I'll ck. out dillon's site!
Dr. Rob,
You are right, ivory grips would
set it off, even a light walnut...I'd
be think'n hard to invest the engraving dollars in a FEG...
But I may invest a re-crowning.
Telewinz,
I've been tempted to buy some of those
mags...other than hard to load, they function
ok?
