TOKYO, April 12 - Japanese police said today they had arrested a 26-year-old unemployed man suspected of wearing squirrel and other animal costumes to lure teenage girls and molest them at his home.
Michiaki Nagano, dressed as a brown-and-white squirrel or a horse, allegedly lured two 14-year-old girls on separate occasions between July and December in Shizuoka, central Japan, police spokesman Katsuji Yamamoto said.
Japanese newspapers dubbed Nagano 'a wolf in squirrel shape' and said his animal guises had been a familiar sight in downtown Shizuoka.
He befriended teenage girls and lulled them into a false sense of security with his animal antics, police said.
'He also claims to have been a private tutor and he approached the girls under the pretence of offering them private tuition' at his home, the spokesman added.
Nagano played video and card games with the girls before sexually abusing them, Yamamoto said.
A number of girls were believed to have visited Nagano's home and police were investigating whether other sex crimes had been committed, the spokesman said.
Nagano had previously worked as a private tutor, the Yomiuri Shimbun and other dailies said.
