HS Precision Tactical Takedown

Hi all. A few months ago, I purchased a HS Precision Sniper rifle in it's tactical configuration. I wanted a good takedown rifle (for easy travel), and I needed wanted the best accurracy for the buck.

I've only shot it a few times so far, with my best grouping at .75" @ 100yds. (bipod only, no rest)

I'm wondering if anyone else has any experiences or tips that they would like to share regarding this or similiar HS rifles.

I'm particularly curious as to what other owners use for their scope.

Thanks
-Nick

HS Precision Tactical Takedown .308
(Pro Series)
MK4 2 piece mount + rings
Leupold Mark IV 10x40 (mil-dot)
Harris bipod

PS. I have hi-res pics if anyone would like to see it closeup...

Not to be picky or anything, but the Army uses the M24 and there is a WORLD of difference between Army shooters and Marine Snipers :p . Sorry couldnt resist. Excellent choice on the rifle. I have been drooling to get one, but have not been able to come up with the cash yet. As for scope, it all depends on what you want to do with it. As a tactical rifle goes 25X is WAY too much. I am currently using Leupold 3.5-10 LR M3 and am happy with it. Good clarity, easy to use controls that are consistent. Personal prefferance would be toward the Schmidt & Bender 3-12X50 with a 34mm tube, but there again $1100+ for a scope is WAY out of my current budget

Postman -

I called up HS Precision about 3 months ago, and they assured me a of at least a 2 month wait. Well, I was going on vacation in 3 weeks, so I wanted to pick up a nice rifle system by then.

As it happened, I walked into my local dealer, and the owner just ordered and received in stock, 3 HS rifles. 2 of which were takedown. The one that I got is essentially the HTR like the one you ordered, but it's a takedown. (That pic on the "tactical rifles" page is esentially my rifle - in it's case.) I have the fluted barrel, adj stock, etc.

I'll send up a pic here later tonight, as I'm at work right now.

I put a Leupold Mark 4 M3, 10x40 mildot scope on mine. It's a flawless scope, however, I'm starting to realize the value of a large magnification at 100+ yds. I'm looking at a 2nd scope, the Bushnell Elite 4200. The model is an 8-32 x 40 scope. Considering that my M3 cost $1100 - and the Bushnell costs only $425... not a bad deal really. Who knows, I may end up selling the Leupold in the long run. nah... ;)

I've had a H-S takedown since 98'.I first saw them at the 1998 shot show.Mine has a remington reciever.I had a softer recoil pad installed and had mine mag-na-ported.I shoot the berger 210 gr.VLD's @ 2900 fps.So far my best groups have been .190 @100 yds and 1.75"@ 500 meters.I have a Leupold long range 6.5-20 30MM/side focus w/marine corps mil dot (luminescent) from premier reticles.I've had it apart hundreds of times and it has never failed to shoot great.Since the take down's only cost a little more than the std versions, the take downs have been more popular with most of the shooters I know. The new H-S action combines the best features of several mfgs.It is round bottomed like the Rem.,Has a 3 position safety like the win.,and has a Sako-styled extracter. The magazine assembly they make is the best I've seen for upgrading a Remington 700 to mag feed. You can get them from Brownell's or H-S for around $190.00 ea.They require a little fitting.I am told that H-S will be producing a 10 rd. magazine also. For the money,I think the H-s is the best deal out there.

Nickcarr,

I thought long and hard about the takedown rifle. I decided the money I would save could be spent on a better set of optics.

Right now, my long range shooting has been limited to my Bushmaster shorty AK with a 3x9 Nikon. For the Bushmaster, this works fine, but I always want to get closer to my target.

I have serious doubts as to ever having to use the HTR as a tactical rifle. I picture it more as a benchrest rifle that can take a beating and out live me. For this reason I am leaning towards the 8.5x25x50mm Leupold.

Have you found any advantage while target shooting with the Mark 4 10x that would be lost by doubling or tripling the power?

You guys are making me incredibly jealous. i guess I better lay off the beer and dining out and get back to stuffing that piggy bank some more.

nickaarr: What dealer actually stocks HS rifles?

The problems I have encountered with HIGH power scopes as in 20-30pwr are mirage and wobbling. Get up in the power and that crosshair starts to really jump around. If youre mainly gonna be using it as a bench rest, the wobbling wont be too much of a problem as you'll always have good support. For your intended use mirage will more than likely be the worst thing with the higher powers.

Taz, what are you talking about. All of my local dealers carry HS Precision! - NOT! ;)

At a bigger gun shop, I asked if they could get them. I'd get a nasty stare or some cynical response.

I was a lucky sob... the owner of the shop where I got mine, happen to have HS Precision do a demo day there. He liked them so much, that the owner bought 3 of them to sell. (He was about to *own* the one I bought, but I snatched it from him... thanks to an un-informed salesman.)

But, seriously Taz, I think you should break down and buy one. They're fun to own and shoot. What do you really need that extra car for anyway? ;)

Nickcarr, you must shop at WSI in Bellevue WA.
I was very impressed when they had two HS rifles on display a couple of months ago. ::drool:: ::droll::

Hmmmmm I haven't been there in a while, I think I'll head that way tommorrow.

Nickcarr: I have an HS take-down in the standard/varmint configuration. Caliber 25-06 Ackley Improved. With the 100 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip @ 3450 FPS it is shooting right at 1.00" at 300 yards. Try your rifle off a good set of sand bags on a HEAVY bench. I've had poor luck shooting for groups off of a bi-pod. It's a great piece! :D

I don't have an HS Precision Rifle, I only have an Accuracy Internations AWP.

I topped this off with a Leupold Mark 4 M1 10x w/mildot. I like the M1 better then the M3 because it doesn't use the cams... it has the Target knobs and I can set up different zeros and come ups/downs for different rounds.

I've been extreamly happy with that scope.

Phil, that is correct... ;)

Hmm... I'll have to try shooting off of sandbags. I haven't tried that yet.

Anyone have any experience with the Bushnell 4200 Elite 8-32X40?

Nickcarr

I forgot to answer your other question. I have a Nightforce 3.5x15 scope with the NP2DD reticle. ABSOF#$%INGLUTELY love it! :D
