HP in DA

I don't know a lot about them but....

Try the trigger pull, it is kind of rough and long. Among DAO's it is pretty bad. Not that you want a three pound trigger on a DAO, just that this one is pretty bad.

If you check the prices being offered for them on some of the auction boards, etc you will find they go out the door at $375 to $400.

If you want the improved version of this gun, try a CZ 75 or 85.

Long, smooth as silk trigger pull. Same hi cap ability.

Thanks Coltdriver, I have a CZ75B. I read a review of the FN and was curious as to how they compare, since I had looked at HPs in the past. I'm sold on CZs, though... ;)

By chance was that the review in "the rifleman"? After reading it I wanted one too.:)

FN should have made this a big production item before cz's were so dang cheap!

I have an FN HP-DAc, which is the compact version of the HP-DA. Long, sticky DA pull, which stacks near the end. SA pull isn't great, either. I think the pull is considerably affected by the firing pin stop (or whatever FN calls it), which has to be lifted up by contact with the trigger bar to allow free passage of the firing pin (okay, my terminology is fuzzy, but it's kind of an odd gun). Anyway, greasing the bearing surface between these parts has helped the stickiness. The parts have also worn in some, so the trigger is getting better.

My real complaint about the FN HP-DAc is not the trigger, however, but the bothersome takedown. Unlike the original HP, the slide has to be held back by hand in order to press out the slide stop. I have to hold the slide back with one hand, lift the rear of the stop with the other hand, while pressing out the stop with my third hand. The stop is held in by the recoil spring, so pressing it out is a pain. Getting it back in is also a pain. Plus, if the stop isn't aligned just right during insertion it'll scratch the slide or frame.

At first I didn't like the plastic hammer drop lever. But it looks sturdy and well designed, so I'm all right with it now.

I may sound like a dissatisfied owner, but am not. Quirks aside, the FN HP-DAc is an interesting, well-made pistol. I'd kinda like a full-size version to go with it.
