how's this varmint combo?

I think that I'll be getting a REM VS in .22-250 with a Harris bipod and BSA contender or platinum scope.

I've heard that the coated-lenses scopes that BSA offers rival Leupolds (could be a load of BS?) for about 1/4 the price.

What are the pros and cons of getting a model that goes up to 32x?
Also, anyone think that I can get a better rifle in this price range?

Thanks

I bought my dad a VS .22-250

I think your rifle is great. I think your scope will probably work great too. However, to think you are going to get a comparable quality scope for 1/4 of the price? That is a load of BS. The scope might work good and you will probably enjoy using it, but I don't think it is going to really measure up to the abilities of the Leupold. I think that sounds like a good rig to me and I hope you enjoy using it. I am sure many a Varmints will fall prey to its abilities.

A good rifle with excellent optics will yield great results. Rifles can always be tweaked.

A great rifle with so-so optics will yield so-so results. The optics are the limiting factor in any rifle/scope combination.

Know what kind of performance you want and the conditions you will shoot in. Buy your glass based on that. If you buy glass that doesn't perform, you'll just end up spending more money later for glass that does perform. You may not need the low-light performance and insanely tight repeatability of my Nightforce NXS. Then again, you might. I put a Nightforce on a friend's 700PSS. He had been using another cheaper scope, and had trouble getting good groups. After the Nightforce, he shot quite a few 1/4-1/2 moa groups. The target image was clearer, and the reticle didn't shift.

I would agree with the Savage. I have a 112FVSS in a 22-250 and I love it. I ut a Simmons 6-18X44 on it and it shoots 1/2" groups all day at 100yds. I just bought a BSA Platinum in the 6-24X44 and it does very well on my 308. I just sighted it in last week and went from a 1-1.2" group with a 3-10X44 to less than 1/2" with the 24X at 100yds. I did have to take the first scope back though. The crosshairs turned inside the scope. Where I bought it, they replace all scopes for the first 30 days and the manager said that even the leapolds and the weavers do the same thing. He said that a bad scope is a bad scope, does not matter who made it. The new one seems to do a very nice job for the $150 I have in it. I could not afford the $500 or more for the same in a weaver, burris or leapold.

Good luck,
ChrisW
