Howa .308 ammo choice?

Hey guys, my fiance' got me a Howa 1500 .308 this past weekend as an early Christmas present (yea, she's pretty great). I've ordered a Simmons whitetail classic scope to mount on it for now. I'm on a college budget so I'll upgrade later.

Now for my question, if any of you guys have one of these, what kind of ammo do they seem to like? I know it varies from gun to gun but just looking for ideas of where to start. I'll probably eventually get into handloading for it but right now that just not possible.

Thanks guys

Ammo for .308...

LHKing--Fiance' sounds like a keeper! Treat her well!

As to the ammo choice: When I have a centerfire rifle for which this question arises (Not often because I usually handload) the thing I try first is the cheaper Federal ammo, the stuff in the blue box. Cheaper than the high-falutin' Federal Fusions, and it has worked surprisingly well.

Federal brass is good for reloading, too.

I would try Remington Cor-Lokt before I started spending a bunch of cash on ammo. I have been hunting for 25yrs and cor-lokt has always done the job and done it accurately. For the money I dont think there is a better bullet out there. I reload for most of my rifles but when I use factory ammo in my hunting rifles its always cor-lokt.

You didn't really specify if its for target or hunting use.. If its for anything other than hunting, there is usually no better ammo than Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr or 175gr. Both can be had for <$20 a box online.

I would go with what Bamashooter said. Start with the standard Remington Core lokt or Federal Powershock 150 grain or whatever you want. Don't waste your money on premium ammo and you don't need handloads to have great accuracy in my opinion. A lot of the newer rifles like the Howa/Vanguard and Savage will shoot the nothing special ammo under an inch at 100 yards all day long. Really give it a try before you blow money on premium ammo you have a good rifle known for great accuracy.

I have a .308 Howa 1500 Varmint Supreme. I agree with GONIF the inexpensive 150gr Federal Powerpoints shoot great (consistent 1.5" 5 shot groups ~100yards) in my rifle. I also have gotten very good groups out of both American Eagle and Prvi 168gr OTM's. The Prvi is a steal at ~$12.50/20 rounds.

Thanks fellas.

I've been away from deer hunting and rifles for that matter for a few years. Just getting back into it. I'm mostly going to hunt with this gun but probably spend some target time with it too.

Looks like I'll pick up some core-loc and others and spend some time at the range this weekend. :D
