a friend offered me his 1500 varmint edition in .223 for $400 said he hasn't shot but a box of ammo through it and it is just not needed in his collection ,he has a 22-250 and a .243 and his AR so he does not shoot the howa, i have not seen the gun yet nor do i know anything about them but i do want a bolt action .223, if its in good shape is $400 a good deal? im sure its taken care of he is a fanatic on gun care but that is a good chunk of money for me at the moment, what do those of you who have shot one think of them ?

I have not shot one, but I would jump on that!

I have wanted one for a while, I'll buy it if you dont:)

Cdnn had the same rifle for $399 nib. Just as an FYI. Still a good price as I have not seen if they are still running it for that price.

If it's in like new condition w/o dings, it's probably worth $400. By the time you pay shipping and FFL fee on an ordered rifle, it'll cost you $450. Your friend might let it go for a little less if that's what you offered.
I have a similar rifle that shoots cloverleafs with both Fiocchi and American Eagle "tipped" 50 grain varmint ammo. Be advised, these rifles don't shoot bullets over 55 grains at all well.

Mobuck is correct. These rifles have a 1/12 twist. anything heavier than a 55 grain will be, well, hit or miss. (sorry).

But that wouldn't botter me. All I have are 55gr bullets. If I wanted to shoot heavier bullets I would just use my excellent 243.

I purchased a new Howa 1500 Varmint 223 Rem with a Howa case for $ 400 from a person , non hunter who had won it at an raffle. I did glass bed the action and adjust the trigger but it shot 3/4 in groups before glass bedding.. I get 1/2 inch five shot 100 yard groups , some times smaller with it. It was one of my best deals.

I had one and they are great weapons. $400 is a fair deal if it has a sporter weight barrel, it becomes a very good deal if it has a heavy Varmint/Target barrel.

Rob

My New Howa 6.5 x 55 "Break-In" Shots

I went out yesterday and shot my brand new Howa 6.5 x 55 Gameking with some cheapo $19.00 factory ammo. I even forgot the brand. I am pretty impressed with the rifle. Other than my Sweedish Mauser, 6.5 x 55, that I bought about 20 years ago for $49, it is the least expensive rifle I've ever bought; but it feels good and shoots good, as you can see from the pictures I have attached from shooting yesterday.

I shot the first 18 rounds following the mfg "break-in" procedure. The one bullet outside of the group was the very first shot I took... I jerked it because I was anticipating some recoil, which was stupid because I knew this thing didn't have much recoil. I didn't know if it was sighted in with a bore sighter, so I set the target at 25 yards, pulled the bolt and aligned it on the target then took those 18 shots. I moved my sights 4 right and 4 up to see if I could get a little closer to center when I moved the target out to 100 yards. In the 2nd picture you can see where I hit with my 19th and 20th shots from 100 yards.

I shot another 40 rounds, and every bullet was grouped within 2" of center and about 2" high. I think I could shoot a little better if the local gun range had higher benches. But it was close to home and easy to go shoot my new rifle.

My initial thoughts on the Howa 1500 rifle and action, it is nice! I would buy another Howa.
