Someone who believes a woman should get legal and proffesional help to remedy a problem with an abusive husband or a sexual predator? This person thinks this would be better than a handgun and waiting periods are a good thing.

I'd leave her alone and simply fade away. It sounds like she is too divorced from reality to make sense to.
No sense casting pearls before swine.

I have a secretary like that. She thinks she was reincarnated from an abused animal in a previous life....uh huh...that's uh....interesting!

Check out AWARE: Arming Women Against Rape and Endangerment
http://www.aware.org

They cover all types of self-defense and have a small quiz.

I think the info is of value to everyone.

I hope this helps.

With the limited info here, it's kinda hard to make a call since we don't know the particulars.
But, in general, it is an excellent idea to talk to lawyers, cops, judges about a problem; and to file all kinds of reports and get no-contact orders/restraining-orders.
Sure, none of that will actually prevent a bad guy attacking you, but you're going to look a whole lot better to the jury after you have to shoot the guy.
If you have solid documentation of his/her harrassment, attacks, stalking;
and if you can prove (via such reports) that you have made every logical effort to avoid a confrontation;
then you are going to have a much easier time proving that your shooting was a justified last resort to save your life.

Restraining orders do not prevent crime, they only label someone as an "Official Bad Guy".

That's my opinion, -Kframe

Ask your friend if he or she has ever tried to get a restraining order from the local authorities. When I was interning at the Philadelphia DA's criminal complaint unit, we turned away a lot of people who wanted restraining orders. Most people don't realize the limited group of people who can actually GET restraining orders.

Then have your friend buy a copy of Gavin deBecker's "The Gift of Fear" and read it (ignore his slight anti-gun leanings), especially chapter 10. There are some nice accounts of people found murdered with restraining orders in their purses or pockets.
