How tough is it to rebarrel mauser?

I am getting a notion to take one of my C&R's and rebarrel it. probably a VZ-24 to 30-06 or 35 Whelen. It seems like it shouldn't be too amazingly difficult, as plenty of people seem to do it. Any advise on how to start, or what not to do? I am not interested in fully sporterizing the gun, with a new stock, etc. Is one limited by the original cartridges OAL? Is there a web resource for this procedure? Thanks

JNSN. Mausers are fairly easy to rebarrel. Best check magazine length though. Some of the 7mm and 8mm Mauser magazines a a bit short. If a 30-06 round with a 220 gr. bullet will go into the magazine without binding, you should be all right. I think you have to make a cut for the extractor, but other than that it's like any other rebarrel job, I would imagine. I'd check with george String in the gunsmithing forum, as he'd know best. I have Mausers in 30-06, 7x57, .35 Whelan, .270 Win and .308 Win. Some are on commercial actions, and several are on converted military actions. All work well.

On a Mauser you don't have to make an extractor cut in the barrel; the 'cut' is machined into a collar inside the receiver ring. (Not true of the P17 Enfield and model 70, which use Mauser type extractors also.)

Very easy project but nobody makes barrels chambered for them. They fit on the same concept as AR barrels but nobody makes them to spec. If the barrel is made to factory tolerances they just screw in but all new barrels are short chambered and not to spec.
