What is the easy/preferred way to remove bluing from a firearm?

Guy wants to "brown" the bbls of a coach gun. Besides steel wool and elbow grease, is there another way?

Vaseline won't remove bluing. If anything it will protect it from rust.
Birchwood Casey makes Blue & Rust Remover commercially. Hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, ferric chloride will all remove rust quickly.

Birchwood Casey makes a browning solution that can be applied over the blue; just let it sit a while or apply moderate heat.

The Casey product works great on warm metal with ALL traces of old finish and oils removed. Make sure you got it down to the metal, or you start over and it's a LOT more work (don't ask how I know).

Naval Jelly will remove rust bluing. It won't touch the bluing on a Belgian Browning though , it must not be a rust blue on them .
