How to use the "funnel" reticle on certain scope?

I obtained a riflescope and never used this kind before, it has the "funnel" pattern at the bottom (like this: http://www.airsplat.com/Images/AirsoftScopeRear.jpg)

Sorry, best pic I could find, lol. It's a real scope though that I got, not for airsoft.

Anyone know how to use this for range estimating? I doubt the math is the same at all for mildots, correct? I'd have to set something up like vertical decimeter lines and find at a 100m at what power the funnel lines match up?

The only comment i have is, I bet the "funnel" part doesnt serve an actual measurement purpose. Its probably just to draw the eye and help with target acquisition.

If there wasnt something to distinguish the different lines, like say non parallel perpendicular lines, or maybe varying thickness, or color, you wouldnt be able to quickly pick where you were. It would just be a formless grid.

^ Wow, thanks!

So basically the 2 patterns equate to that it's two ways to do the same thing as far as rangefinding goes. The bottom is calibrated for a person sized target. The top is obviously not the same as using mildots but I can figure it with that info.

Thanks!
