How to tell a mag is pre-ban?

I've been wondering how one determines if an AR15 magazine is preban? I've seen old 20 and 30rd Colt mags being sold as pre-ban in a gunshop. In another box was an assortment of "out of state only" mags that to me look identical to the pre-ban ones. How does one tell?

The Clinton ban died in 2004. What difference does it makes if a magazine was made prior to a ban that has expired? Lots of folks are making magazines these days.

It depends on where you live if the ban expired or not.
NYS, ban still in force as NYS law.
MD, cap limit.
& so on.

Its a bit like antiquities, "If it says "BC" on the date, it's probably a fake!":)

When the ban was enacted, most manufacturers started stamping a date code on the magazine bodies.

Most, if not all, continued to do so even after the Federal ban was rescinded. Chances are, if it doesn't have a date on it, it is most likely produced before the 1994 ban.

However, it might not be.

^^^^^^^^^^^^

What Crow Killer said. Look for a date code on the body of the mag. I don't think they ever put them on the floor plate.

For guys behind the lines and not in free states, pre-ban is very important to know about.

One easy way to spot some of the more common post ban mags is to look for the manufacturer. C Products started making mags in the mid to late 90's so ANY C Products mag is post ban even if there's no date code on the mag body.

^^True, but one could get away with it. It is up to the attorney general to prove that the mag is illegal. If they can't do it, then you can use it.

The good news is all P-Mags are post ban so it very easy to tell them apart........lol:) the bad news all P-Mags are post ban so its very easy to tell them apart.......lol:eek:

Thanks for the input. I was looking at some mags at another shop and none of them were marked (inside or out). They are metal and look like they've been around awhile. I'd guess they are preban.

If it is being sold to you as a pre-ban and there is no date or anything else on the magazine that would lead a you or others to reasonably believe otherwise, I would assume that you would be in the clear.

Another thing you can do is keep an eye out on gun forums. Some people, like myself, will sell all their old "preban" magazines to those of you "behind the lines" for the price of replacement mags.

Or

You could also just move to a free state so you don't have to worry about hat.:D

HiCaps!!!

Armed Citizens,

If ya live in a ban state like me the only thing that matters is your age?

If YOU were 18, or older, on Jan 1st, 2000 then YOU are good to go w/any Hi Cap mags because YOU are grandfathered in as having owned them when it was still a "FREE STATE" and "legal" to both "own & purchase" them all day long!!!:D

If YOU were old enough but juss ****ed up and never got em cause ya never thought that they would really be banned then go to a "FREE STATE" next door and get "unmarked & undated" mags...:p

YOU will be okay once YOUR safely back in your banned state juss say ya "got em at a gun show or gun store" back before the ban and LE can not prove otherwise IMHO!!!

If YOU were not of age on Jan 1st, 2000 buy a bunch of 10 round mags or risk multiple FELONIES for each individual Hi Cap in your possession...:(

Welcome to GUN CONTROL younger generation of CALIFORNIANS good luck w/all that finger printing, photo ID'ing, gun rationing, legislative BS, that has written your 2nd Amendment into the dust bin of history!

GOOD TIMES...
