How To Soften a Mosin M-44 Carbine?

I have read plenty of threads here about how the M-44 kicks like a mule...I just saw my M-44 for the first time today and it is a beauty! once I get the cosmoline off (thanks stumpy) it will look like a brand new rifle...I have searched and searched but I can't find a slip-on pad for the butt-end of my rifle...I have heard you can get them...I just don't know where...if anyone has purchased one could you please leave a link as to where I can get it?
Thanks,
Tony.

Out of curiosity, why not go ahead and put either a Pachmyr pad on, or one of these new "space age"-material pads that's supposedly 25%-30% more effective than the Pachmyr?

It's not like you're desecrating a rare collector's item...

M-44

I bought a tin of ammo that is probably older than I am and have been blasting my way through it. I have been using a PAST shoulder pad. Without it, I would have been bruised up. I am getting good groups too as I flinch less.

I've put nearly 1000 rounds through my M-44 (good ole Polish version), and at this point, I'm beyond using a butt pad. It may not be for everyone, but some folks might find that if you just shoot it a ton of times, you just get used to it and toughen up a bit. I did.

On the other hand, I've found a couple butt pads that seem to fit over the end of it (my girlfriend and brother aren't as fond of shooting it "naked" as I am ...). I'm sorry that I can't think of the name, but if you've got a good gun shop around just go in and ask them if you can try on a few butt pads on it.

BTW, don't you just love this gun? Cheap and fun is such a great combination :)

I've never found the recoil to be all that bad with my Polish M-44.

Maybe you might want to go try yours first and see for yourself if you really need to change anything with your rifle.

Also---I think I've seen slip-on pads in the Cabela's catalogs.

Another option would be to change the rifle over to a synthetic stock with a recoil pad built in. Cheaper than dirt has a Monte Carlo style stock for less than $60.00. The curve in the stock will help with the recoil as well as the recoil pad. I've shot a M-44 in this configuration and it was wonderful. I may get one of those stocks for myself for Christmas.

Hi Pointblank!

You got a Wal Mart in your part of the state? They sell a slip-on pad that fits my 91/59 for about 9 bucks.
Tames the recoil enough to make you able to *really* notice the blast & flash these little cannons belch out with each shot;) !
Kind of like setting off a concussion grenade in front of your face.
Fun!!!:D

Pointblank2k, like folks said, Cheaper Than Dirt or Cabela's or a gunshop...Sometimes I've found butt pads at places like WalMart.

To do them "righteously", a one-inch belt sander is a Good Thing. I bought one from Harbor Freight for about $50. Sears has 1" belts, for refills.

I'm with Sapienza on this, first range visit wasn't fun, but I don't notice recoil with it now, no bumps bruises or anything. Until of course I went prone and the little bugger slipped up and got my collarbone.

Hey Guys,
Thank's for all the great advice! that was EXACTLY what I was looking for...I will try it out without the butt-pad first...but I think I might enjoy it more without "flinching" each time I pull the trigger:D
Tony.

I'm not particularly recoil-sensitive, but I've never seen the point to unnecessarily beating on myself.

My first centerfire rifle was a 1917 Enfield, in .30-'06. As a kid, 5'-11" and 135 pounds, that steel buttplate dang near beat me to death!

'Twas a happy day when I finished the Bishop stock, with its soft buttpad. :)
