i own a smith and wesson model 19 with a six in barrel and would like to know the correct method to shorten the barrel to 4 and one half inches.

You could have a smith cut it back and then afix a new front sight.
Or,
you could send it back to S&W or to a smith and ask them to replace the barrel with a 4".
The 2nd method will be cheaper, easier, and won't hurt the value of the gun. The 1st method will really impact the value. Your choice.

You should have better luck rebarreling the revolver than cutting the tube on it now. If you cut the barrel installed now the lettering on the barrel will no longer be centered.

Unless the gun has history for you, it would be easier and cheaper just to swap yours for a 4", gun for gun. Unless you really want a 4 1/2". Thats not a factory barrel length.

I had a 6" M-29 that I wanted shortened. It turned out that the best way was to send it to S&W and have them do the work. While it was there, I had them install a narrow, smooth trigger and do an action job.

Search for a 4" barrel. Have either S&W or a reputable gunsmith swap out the barrels. KEEP that 6" barrel. The last time I checked, a 6" barrel was worth around $200.00. If I had it to decide, I would keep the 6" and find a 4" revolver.
