How to remove laquer from lettering?

I just bought a used Redhawk with blued finish. The previous owner used a gold laquer stick to highlight the lettering. It looks pretty good, but I just put some stag grips on and believe it would look better now without the gold. I tried to remove it with some paint thinner last night with MINIMAL success. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Nail polish remover (or just acetone) and a q-tip might work. You'll want to oil it up after the acetone as it'll be dry.

It occured to me after posting this, that I have some laquer thinner at home also....DOH! I'll try that tonight also.

"lacquor thinner and a toothbrush" ... and that's what I did. Took it all off in about 2 minutes. Thanks for the ideas guys.

Are you sure it's lacquor? There's a product out there that would allow you to place real gold in the lettering you talk about, it may very well be this stuff in which case I don't know what you would use to remove it.
