how to polish up the flats of a blackhawk hammer?

I've got a nice 3-screw blackhawk thats in great shape except the hammer which has a bunch of scratches and tarnish on the sides. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to clean that up?

Use crocus cloth on a flat surface. Polish the hammer (removed from the gun, of course) on that. If very badly stained, maybe the very finest emery cloth. But go easy with the emery cloth.

To get a high polish after the crocus cloth, use a polishing compound on a buffing disc in a drill press.

Yes. It is called lapping. Do not attempt to polish the sides holding the hammer in your hand, you will round the edges.

Lay your polishing medium; crocus cloth, super fine sandpaper, whatever you are using, flat on a flat surface. Really flat. Rub the flats of the hammer over the flat abrasive surface. Don't try to hold onto the hammer. Just lay a couple of fingers at the center of the hammer and push it around on the lapping surface. Push it in a figure '8' pattern to even the wear. Don't rush, lapping is a time consuming process.

I don't have a Ruger to look at right now, but IIRC, those hammers are not given a high polish, so if you want it to look original, you might want to stop at 600 grit or so rather than going to crocus cloth.
