How to make brushed aluminum finish?

How is a "brushed" aluminum or stainless finish usually created? Can this finish be created in a home shot or are special machines usually used? I've seen a bunch of 1911's in stainless that have a great "brushed" finish and I would like to know how to duplicate it. Any help would be great.
 
I've done it thusly with good results.

Depending on the grain you want to achieve, you shoud select an appropriate wet-or-dry abrasive paper. Wet nicely, and sand lightly in the direction you want the brush marks to have...

I've used this to re-brush scratched aluminum and stainless both...
