How to keep my new Ruger 22/45 from jamming?

I recently got a new Ruger 22/45 and since ive had it I have had it jam on me about 5-6 times out of about 200-300 rounds being fired through it. This doesnt just happen on one kind of ammo, I have had it happen on winchester super x, remington subsonic, and CCI minimag ammo. Any suggestions or ideas on how i can minimize this? Thanks.

When I got my 22/45 it either jammed or misfired on about 5-6 out of the first several hundred rounds. However, now I hardly ever have a malfunction of any kind (It's at about 1000+ rounds). Perhaps yours is still breaking in. Any other 22/45 owners out there with similar experiences?

KowHunter, G23 might have hit on it. I don't recall how many misfires I had at first in my MkII, it was too long ago. You might want to manually cycle the bolt for an hour or two, not dry firing, just cycling the bolt. That might smooth out any rough spots that are delaying the bolt just a tad.

One other thing - please describe the jam. It might be something unrelated to break-in. If you have several mags, mark them and see if the jams occur with one mag more than the others.

I always say an autoloader needs at least 200 rounds through it before I start worrying about misfeeds. Gotta let the springs settle in, etc.

Are there any other brands of ammo that you can try? My buddy has a 22/45 that feeds Federal high-velocity solids perfectly. It jams occasionally with CCI Blazer ammunition. I know you've tried different brands of ammunition already but maybe there's a magic load out there (high velocity, hyper velocity, etc.) that might work.

Mine took a few hundered rounds to smooth out the bolt.

Now as long as I keep it reasonably clean and lightly oiled, I don't have any problems. I did polish the feed ramp, but that had more to do with the fact I had just got a new Dremel, than the pistol needing it.

Describe your jams and someone here should be able to help you diagnose it.

The dealer I bought my 22/45 from told me to shoot a brick of high velocity through it to break it in. Worked beautifully. I have had 3 misfires out of about 1500 rounds. These were from bad remington ammo.
Great gun. Real accurate.
Enjoy.

Mine is flawless. It does jam up after about 2,000 rounds but thats cause its dirty. Fresh out of the box its been great. Now my old MKII is a diffrent story.

I had the same problem, maybe worse (at least 1 jam every other magazine or less) with a couple of different brands for the first 150 rounds thru my new 22/45. I switched to Remington Golden Bullet LR, and have had no jams since (abt 160 rds). Intend to try the others again once it's broken in with these Rems.

DO NOT buy that Gray box from Winchester. The lead bullet is so soft that it kept collapsing on the feed ramp of my 22/45. It worked fine for the 10/22. My Ruger kept misfeeding when it was new. Now it does it occasionally, about 1 in 500rnds.

I had the same problem with mine. I now have about 700-800 rounds through it. Last time out I was using CCI mini-mag with no problems. I have had problems with Federal Classic and Winchester Wildcat. No problems with Aguilla high velocity, but I have had mixed results with Aguilla depending on the type and the gun. Hopefully the problem is cured. I will re-try some of the other brands again.

That's easy. Clean it well, put it in the closet, or display it appropriately, and get a Browning Buckmark to shoot. :)

I guess the advice to get a Buckmark is so you really know how to deal with the jams, then the Ruger will appear to be very reliable. :)

I bought a new 22/45 last month, I have put about 1000 rnds through it, tried every type of manufactor of shells, it jammed on me after the second clip(can't remember the name of shell). Ive been useing federal high velocity hollow point for the last 800 rnds with no problems.

I have noticed that those federal high velocity hollowpoints seem to jam for me. If you compare them to any other round, they are a tad longer. Although sometimes they work fine.

Make sure the mag is seated and all the way in. This is one of the biggest reason a Ruger auto will jam. I've found this is the cause of most of mine.

Sell it! I did not like my 22/45 at all. It is inexpensive allright, down right cheap in turns of quality, surprising from Ruger. I sold the 22/45 and bought the MK II Bull bbl. Much happier!!! :D
