how to keep my loaded gun

So I need to keep my loaded gun at my apartment and wanted to get some ideas on places to keep it. Its a small one bed, bath, kitchen and living room. Should I keep it under my side of the bed or keep the hammer under the bed and the gun in the closet right next to the front door. Im just not sure and what shouldg I keep it in if under the bed?

If you live by yourself (no kids, etc.) my choice would be to keep it arms length from where I sleep. If kept loaded (round in the chamber) you might want to keep it in a holster as well.

It's mostly personal preference... just stay away from keeping it loaded and unholstered underneath your pillow ;)

I agree with Sixer. Near where you sleep. I also keep mine ready (condition one) in a holster (we also have no kids). It's easier to retreat to the bedroom during the day then to get to the front door in the middle of the night.

Thanks that makes sense. Would you just keep it in a holster and leave it out under the bed or in something? I guess I could leave the hammer or ball bat under the couch.

Mine is in my headboard right next to my head. We have a headboard with a built in slider cabinet. Kind of like a waterbed headboard if you will. If you have a night stand that would probably be where I would put it. If you don't have anyone else in the apartment (i.e. kids) then it really wouldn't matter much for me (except it does need to be in a holster if you are keeping a round in the chamber, this is a standing rule in our home.) Other than that what ever makes you feel comfortable. If you do have kids then you need to lock it up some how. Just my thoughts.

I have my loaded and chambered XD in a holster in the night stand on my side of the bed.

I don't understand keeping it under the bed. Wouldn't you want to get to it ASAP?

If you're looking for a place to secure it (such as when not carrying) I'd suggest one of the lock-boxes with a tether cable. They usually hold a handgun and 1-2 magazines quite nicely. I have one secured to my seat rails in my car, so I can secure my pistol when going to a "gun-free" zone or when I can't carry for any reason.

Just attach the cable to something sturdy; under-counter plumbing should do the trick, being rather difficult to dislodge when compared to other options.

Well we have a small bedroom and when I say under the bed it would be close enough for me to reach while on the bed where I normally sleep. The night stand is where the girlfriend sleeps and im on the side close to the door a bg would come through leading to the living room. I also have a clear shot to the door leading to the fire escape. How fast can u get a pistol out of a lock box?

Mine is on the headboard right at hand. Loaded and chambered. No kids at home anymore. When grandchildren visit it is locked up.
Anything less than quick, easy access is foolish and potentially deadly.

You might consider this holster,,,

I made a mattress holster very similar to the one on this website,,,
It's perfect as I live alone and don't ever have children over.

Unless my cat figures out how to work a trigger,,,
I think it will serve me well if I ever need it.

It's not how fast I can get a pistol out of a lock box but how fast can you get your pistol out of a lock box?

If you don't have any kids, buy a simple gun case and leave the pistol in that under the bed. No keys to fumble with and it would be within easy reach.

Safe under the bed

I have a loaded and chambered XD9SC that I keep in a MiniVault safe under the bed. My LCR & my P32 are in the headboard cabinet, typically unloaded. I also keep a loaded Mossberg 500 right next to the bed, ready to grab and chamber when I get to the front or back door, hopefully the sound of me racking that slide will cause 'em to rethink what they're about to do!:D

If you keep it in a fabric or leather holster you will run a risk of having rust form on the gun if the relative humidity gets above 50% due to the holster absorbing and retaining moisture from the air. (especially if you are running a humidfier during the winter months) It's generally better to store a gun in open air in a ventilated box. Keep a thin coat of oil on the gun.

I keep my cocked & locked Hi power in my carry rig (KHolster) on the night stand next to my bed with a Surefire G2. Sitting beside it is a Condition 3 Rem 870 12G.

The wife has her SP101 in a cheap Kydex holster on her nighstand with a run of the mill mini-mag light. She is taking a real liking to my Glock 23, however... Thinking about mounting a light on it for her to use.

But, we are the only people who live there and no kids to worry about!

I kept a gun hanging from the corner of the headboard in a shoulder holster. My house was recently broken into and the gun was stolen. I posted about it on another forum. I got called a lot of things for keeping a gun like that, "reckless", "irresponsible", and several others. Keep in mind, we have no kids and there are never any kids in our home either. The gun I kept was fairly rare and had a lot of sentimental value. So my advice to anyone willing to listen would be to not put a gun by your bed that you can't easily replace, whether it be because it's rare or whether it has special meaning to you.

I have no hope of ever seeing my gun again. But I replaced it with an inexpensive Mossberg 835 and no matter what people call me, I always keep a gun within arms reach from the bed.

I keep mine with my socks and undies, my dresser is about 1.5 times armlength from my side of the bed so I could grab it if I had to in seconds. The only reason it is not sitting out on the night stand is I have a cat who likes to knock stuff over.

As for the aspect of theft, i keep my gun somewhere else, somewhere a theif would never guess when I am not home.

Get a cheap nightstand.

Get a cheap gun case.

Use 3 screws and attach one flap of the gun case to the bottom of the nightstand. Keep the gun in the case with the zipper half open. That way you can reach into the gun case and draw the gun and keep the whole thing out of plain view.

Remember, in an apartment, management and maintenance can go inside whenever they want.

Kreyzhorse- I didnt mean you personally but more like a person trying to unlock a lock box and probably without glasses in the dark. If that makes sense. I mean no offense but I dont give a damn how fast you can.
Are the key pads easy to work with. The lock box idea sounds good because 1. Im not so sure that we can have a deadly weapon in the apartment and out where someone can see it would be bad and 2. lately the maintenance guys have been knocking and coming in without us answering ( the building is old and a bunch of stuff has gone wrong). We have said something several times but still the same old. talk about making someone paranoid and on top of that my girlfriend is hard of hearing. Also we/I have no kids (god i hope ).
