I was thinking about getting a carry permit. Does anyone know what I have to go through to get a carry permit in California? I am told that they are hard to get. I am retired Military, no mental illnesses, upstanding citizen. never been jailed, no run-ins with the law, son is a California Highway patrolman, am almost 60 years old. belong to several organizations, like NRA, CRPA. What are my chances and what do I have to go through? Email me at BobDog442@aol.com as I have limited access to webb so might not be able to check for a while. Thank you,Bob

Like the previous post, it depends on the County you live in. Generally speaking, you need a justifiable (sp?) reason for applying for a permit, and if the Sheriff of your County is a good person, and agrees with carrying concealed, you have to qualify, and take an 8 hour class, at least every two years.
And believe me, the classes are worth it. A couple of the "students" in my last class couldn't even hold the gun steady enough to hit a full size target at 7 yards! I have been carrying for the last twenty years, and look forward to and enjoy the classes every time that I re-qualify.
First thing, go ask your Sheriff, and start from there.
Good luck!

It rather depends on whether "northern" CA means "above" or "below" Sacramento. If it's "above" Sac, then most counties more or less treat CCW's as shall-issue.

The Butte County Sheriff, for instance, finds the one word answer "Protection" [on the "essay" page of the application] to be an adequate "justifiable reason" for issuing a CCW permit.

In Butte Co., it's:
  • Take CCW class at local range (~$100)
  • Take target to Sheriff's Dept (in Butte it's 27 of 30 qualifying shots w/in 8.5X11 target @ 21 ft. Target size varies, however. Some Counties qualify on a full-torso target.)
  • Submit fingerprints for background check (~$120)
  • Submit CCW application ($120 initial?)
  • Put thumbprint on permit, which is held by Sheriff's dept...
  • ...and sent through the mail when background check is OK'd.

Renewal is every two years ($70) plus the same class as above.

Generally speaking, you want to talk to your county Sheriff, not your city Chief of Police. Often the Police chiefs (as well as the police) feel quite differently about CCW than the Sheriff Dept's do.

If you live within a City limits, I've been told that you are "supposed" to be refused by your City Chief of Police before you get your permit from the County Sheriff. Most people seem to just go straight to the Sheriff, however.

what exactly would a justifiable reason be? I live In Orange County and have been giving the idea some thaught for some time. Has anyone in the OC gotten there CCW or gone through the hoops? Knowing how things are around here I cant see protection being an exceptable reason. JUst looking for some insite or words of wisdom from those who have tried in my are

I work with several people who have carry permits (in OC). My supervisor, made his case by stating that he carries large sums of money around, and that his life has been threatened by people who he has had to kick off the property, etc. Both are true of course. His record is completely clean, even his driving record is spotless. Compared to many other counties, OC has a favorable reputation for granting permits. I might go for it one day... but I don't think I could make a good case for it at this time. This thread makes it sound even easier: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=25143
