How to get a mossberg shorty and have a longer barrel too....NFA/Canadian

my dream shotgun is a mossberg with maybe a 14-15" barrel, light barrel so the shotty isnt heavy and can be taken backpacking. And a longer barrel that can be thrown on as I wish.

I know this can be done with the 870 but is this possible with the mossberg(that I prefer for its lightness and lack of feed ramp)? seems every mossberg is 18" or heavy wall barrel, and I think the 14"ers might not work with the mag tube.

EDIT- Im Canadian

Unless you live in Canada, you'll need a tax stamp to have a shotgun with a barrel less than 18" (and PLEASE, they are NOT 'shottys', they are shotguns - minor rant over)

Not altogether true - the shortest legal shotgun/smoothbore length barrel is 18' IN THE U.S.A.

Other countries = other laws - the OP's from Canada, & IDK the law there.

Rustle In The Bushes: Mossberg 500 barrels are interchangeable, and sold in bird/buck combos - a 28" VR bird bbl with a 20" or 24" bbl w/rifle sights.

There's no reason you couldn't set up such a combo with the bbl length(s) of your choice, provided the work & lengths are legal where you reside.

.

I have been searching for Mossberg replacement barrels for one of my guns.

Mossberg has new barrels for sale at several retailers. Model 500 in 12ga is easy to locate and run 135 to 180 dollars ( U.S. currency). Model 835 and 590 are also available in a similar price range.

I have had very little luck finding one locally in 20 ga. You should be able to find something in 12 ga to fit your needs.

Canada doesn't restrict barrel length on shotguns, as long as it's not modified.

For example, a Canadian can buy a 10" barreled shotgun without issue. However, he can't shorten an 18" barrel to 10". Whether that includes replacement barrels, I'm not sure.

I have a pair of 14" Mossberg 590 shotguns. I was toying with the idea of getting a rifled barrel cut down to 14" (never did) If I remember right, the 835 and the 590 (with the short magazine tube) use the same barrel.

I don't know if this helps.

Here my shotteee...

"Shortest legal barrel is 18""

Not true in the United States.
There is no legal minimum barrel length per federal law. Under 18" requires a tax stamp. That doesn't in any way make it illegal. And no, this isn't some kind of technicality: it is the law.

Oldzy, what is the length of that shotgun in the pics?

And 444, I think some mistakenly interchange the term "legal length" with "shortest length without any additional paperwork". ie an AOW Class III vs a simple 4473.

So what is the shortest length on a 4473 form can you have is a more appropriate way of asking the question.

But then again, some may think there IS a length that is illegal no matter what I suppose! :D
