Well... this one was not really a "dud" but I guess the procedure would be similar. It's a 22lr that is "loose". You can hold the cartridge and move the bullet a little.

If you went through the whole brick of 500 you'll find 350 of the bullets you can turn with your fingers in the case.

Pick up a brick of Remington cheapo for the true "dud" experience. It'll give you a fun mix of fail-to-fires and slow movers. Good for relieving the monotony of plinking.

Hmm, I was going to say, chuck it into the weeds but then again in rural areas and not on ranges, I can get away with that.:D

NimbleVagrant I agree. If you want to go thru the whole spectrum of duds get some remington bulk. I chunk the dud into the woods but Im shooting in the middle of nowhere. If it was a centerfire dud I would let it sit in the gun for a couple minutes to make sure it wasnt a hangfire, then chunk it into the woods.

Shoot it.
BTW, I buy and use the bulk ammo and like it. A box of 550 will usually have only one or two duds in it.
I even get the occasional dud with high priced stuff in boxes of 50.
So....wats the conclusion? It happens. Live with it.

Vote them out of office.:D

Seriously, the loose bullets can be shot. Dud ammo, stuff that just wont go off, or old ammo you don't want to shoot should be turned over to the local PD or FD, which every has a Bomb Squad.

That's the safest method, and the best CYA method. Also the method recommeded by most Ammo Companies.

When I have a rimfire dud, I just
pry the head off with what ever is
at hand, empty the powder and chuck the case.
No biggy, don't call the police,if they do take it
they'll get O.T. for writing out a report for a
stupid dud

I was on the bomb squad, I got a lot more overtime because people did stupid crap with bullet, powder 'n such.

Lot less overtime involved in taking stuff to the bunker then there is policing up fingers and other assorted body parts.

I've been told a can with motor oil works well,,,

One outdoor range I used in california had a series of 5 gallon drums buried in the ground,,,
There was a good 3' length of 6" pipe welded to the lid of the can,,,
The cans were about half full of motor oil.

I was told they used motor oil because it would "creep" past the crimp into the bullet and foul the powder.

When a can became full they buried it somewhere on the property.

At my rifle and pistol club I was told to "chuck em in the weeds",,,
I wonder about the person who mows those weeds.

I keep a pair of pliers in my range bag anyways,,,
I just pull the bullet and dump the powder,,,
Then I can chuck it in the trash can.
