How to determine height for new sights

I have acquired an old rifle with both front and rear sights missing. Both sights are barrel mounted and the barrell does not have any taper.
If I choose a front sight with a height of, say, .315, is there any need for the rear sight to have an ajustment range that goes below .315?

No there isn't. The rear sight should always be slightly taller than the front sight.
