Greetings:
I recently purchased a Remington US Model 1917 that had been crudely sporterized a long time ago. The ears had been cut off the rear bridge, then they were filed down and a small spring steel peep was screwed in. I spoke to a local smith who siad he could cut the rear bridge identical to a model 30 and then any bases for the model 30 could be used.
After consulting the bible (the Brownells catalog) I noted that under the Weaver base listings, it provides several variations of these receivers, i.e. M1917 cut like Rem 30, Rem 721 and Winchester 70. I did not have any idea that these receivers could be cut to have the same profile as a model 70. Since I would really like to use one of the premium steel one piece bases anyway (Smith, Badger), I would like to know if anyone has personal experience with this - Can the 1917 be cut so that model 70 scope mounts will fit properly and who would be the qualified smith to perform this job?
Thanks,
pojim
