How to change stock on Mossberg 500

I have a Mossberg Model 500 that my dad bought for me when I was young, was my 1st shotgun. It is only a 20ga, but it still has some sentimental value to me so I want to keep it. Thing is, I would like to put some nice synthetic grips on it. How do you remove the pump and rear stock on these ? Also will the pistol grips for the 12 ga. fit the 20 ga, since they are both model 500's ?

Thanks
Derek

There is a long bolt inside the shoulder stock, fixing it to the receiver. You have to remove the butt pad to get at it.

The fore end comes off when you field-strip the action. All of this is covered in the owner's manual. (Sounds like you haven't stripped the weapon, in which case I would highly suggest you do, both to maintain it and to familiarize yourself with the weapon.)

Ok, sounds easy enough. Yea....you are right, I have never completely stripped this down since there was only a few boxes put through it. Did clean it with Hoppes #9 and gun scrubber though.

Get an owners manual

If you don't have the original owners manual, contact mossberg, http://www.mossberg.com/faqs.htm#sendmanual
they will send you one free of charge. But I agree, definitely strip it down, you don't need to go overboard (eg: taking the magazine tube out of the receiver), but it is nice to know how the thing fits together should you ever need to service it. Like I said though, it's worth waiting for the snail mail to deliver you a free owners manual and stripping it right than doing it incorrectly. :)

Now does anyone know if the 12 ga stocks will fit on the 20 ga since they are both a model 500. Its actually the pump handle that Im concerned with.
