How to carry my USP

Cobra 4-6

My USP 40C is my pride and joy. I always carry it in a Fist SOB worn directly mid-back with a small cant. Lately, however, I've read a bunch of messages recently recommending against SOB carry because of risk of spinal injury.

Now, I don't know if this is a real problem or not, but I am concerned. I bought a strong-side IWB from Don Hume (I'm left-handed) and have been trying to find a position as comfortable as the SOB placement.

It seems that no matter where I place it, it sticks out from my body, overly stresses my belt and waist and is generally VERY uncomfortable. Purchasing clothes a size or two larger is not a viable option. I've been looking at Milt Sparks Versa Max 2 as perhaps an alternative holster.

Is my problem the holster, the gun, or what? Is SOB really a problem?

I carry full size USP40. The only way I found comfortable IWB is with a cheap Uncle Mikes flimsy clip holster but it works. The gun in my opinion is real chunky for IWB carry-I too do not like it much, I am not overweight in the least and also do not like having to buy bigger pants.

I would never carry SOB due to the positioning of the firearm. Yes I think it is a problem.

If you can caryy on a belt slide holster and cover with butoon down shirt or other. Quality belt/holster system is very important when hefting the USP40 around, I do it easily even with the full size. Mitch Rosen has the best stuff IMHO.

Good luck.. my USP is also my favorite.

Cobra, go to my post in Gears and Accessories and read the thread on June 1 about belly band holsters and read my thread about holsters, this is wonderful comfortable way of carring your gun.

For these big autos - and the C version is still a big gun... I prefer pancake holsters which will help hide the contour of the gun while under a covering - yet remain comfy to wear.

I carry my USP40 full size in an Alessi Talon Plus IWB (clip) without too much trouble. Much more comfortable than my old Kramer. About $55.

I carry my USP .45C in a strong-side belt slide. Yeah, it's a big gun, and not as easy to carry as some others. But it can work.

I agree with previous comments about SOB carry. I think it's dangerous.

Cobra, I carry a USPc daily. How do you dress when you want to carry?

Let me know and maybe I can give you a suggestion.

I normally wear slacks and a shirt with a sweater or blazer covering (this is during non-summer only). The sweater or blazer typically covers the pistol. Because of a body's shape, there is an indentation at the spine-waist position. That is why SOB works so well.

BTW, summer is not a problem. If I can't wear a covering garment, I carry a Taurus 38 snub in a pocket holster. Works great.

Okay, if I wear any type of jacket, or shirt untucked, I use the Galco Concealable holster. It will make that USPc dissappear. www.usgalco.com

When I carry without a jacket, and shirt tucked I will often wear a light vest over my shirt that is enough to cover my Sig 239 in a Mil-Tec nylon IWB. Not as comfy as other carry methods but it works.

Again, with the jacket or short untucked the Galco is great.

As long as you have something like a Haugen Handgun Leather Model 11,
and some covering garment, no problem. Else, get smaller guns.
