How to buy the right Makarov??

This question pertains to Mak's as well as other foreign (to U.S. anyway) made weapons, such as AK's, SKS's, or 8mm Mauser's.

I see Mak's advertised in Shotgun News for cheap -- from 89-200 dollars. I also know that you can only get so much gun for that little bit of money. I'm wondering how to find the best stuff in that class. Are there brands to look for? In most cases, brands aren't even really listed. Usually just the country of origin. Any help getting started would be appreciated.

First visit the oracle at www.makarov.com

All Maks are good Maks. Each person will rank them differently, but IMHO:

East German (these can only be had used)
Bulgarian (unissued police/military)
Russian (commercial version/if you can get a military/police version go for it)
Chinese (scarcity value but some have reported problems)

Maks are incredible bargains. There are many dealer but the most recommended for new unissued police/military Maks are Dan Tobin of Dan's Sporting Goods (dansportammo@alltel.net), he sells them for $140 delivered (or $125 each for two or more) and Greg Monte (www.jcarmory.com) for $148 delivered.

Search the archives here, plenty of posts on Maks. Move quick, Dan and Greg are almost out, and when these Bulgies are out there's no guarantee more will be forthcoming.

So many pistols, so little money.

Glock, I have just purchased my first Mak. I took the advise I recieved from here and at www.makarov.com, Check this site out. I purchased an E. German from SOG in Ohio. I spent the extra $10. to get one hand picked. I lucked out and got a real beaut. Now you can go to your local gun emporium and see what they might have. My local dealer is selling brand new Arsenels, made in Bulgaria.
Also he has a brand new unissued Bulgarian military Mak for sale. You can check out the Shotgun News for a guy in Kensington PA. by the name of Dan he was selling new unissued Bulgarians for $140.
Everything I read though directed me to purchase an East German they are suppose to be the nicest.
Hope this helps

You never know what you might get in the mail, so I'd recommend going to a gun show where you have a good selection of everything and are able to check for scratches and finish wear. Compare the different models' quality and the gun's feel in your hand. As far as makarovs, the east Germans are generally the better quality, although the Bulgarian military are not far behind. Don't know much about mausers, so can't help you there. I got my Norinco SKS for $225, and the nice Russian models seem to go for $400 or so. It shoots very nicely, though I've had bad luck with USA magazines jamming on the last round. A good gun show in your area is sure to have the perfect weapon for you.

They are all awesome. The sights suck, though. If you plan on changing sights, get a fixed sight military or post unification German model. If you happen by a good deal on a commercial Russian with adjustable sights, grab it. Then buy a Beast slide from Karl at makarov.com. It has Novak sights dovetailed into it. You can't do much sight work on a commercial Russian. If I had the dough right now I'd buy the replacement slide for my Russkie, but I'm gun poor right now after my SIG 229 purchase.

Any Mak is a good Mak. Just go to the case, close your eyes and pick one. It's just that simple!!! :)
