How strong is a S&W 649 .357?

How strong is a S&W 649 .357? Can they handle a steady diet of .357 ammo? I would like to get one for concealed carry, and want to practice with the same ammo that I carry.

I'm approaching 1,500 rds. through a "pre lock" 640, and have just started carrying a new 649. I started out with the 110 gr. Winchesters, went to the "mid range" Remingtons, and handloads which (according to the manual) match the Remington load. The 640 shows no signs of wear and tear - still as tight as ever. My hand, however, takes more time to recover after each range session, especially those involving rapid fire strings. Don't know if this answers your question, but, in my case the gun can take more than my hand. I'm giving some serious consideration to a slightly lighter handload for carry (I can always plead that I REDUCED the load:rolleyes: ) or buying up all the .38 +P Nyclads I can find.

I have had a 649 for over two years and my experience is similar to Walosi. However, I have heard, and believe, that a steady diet of .357 magnums will shorten the life of your J frame. How much, I don't know. Mine is still nice and tight after about 1500 rounds of mixed shooting about half and half .38/.357.

Regards.
