How Should I Modify My Stance?

Due to an accident I'm off my feet, or at least the weak foot/leg, for a couple of months at least. My normal rifle stance is weak leg forward, leaning into the shot a bit.

Since that is not possible for now, any suggestions as to how best to effect deliberate aimed fire from a standing position?

Sounds like "With great difficulty" is not really a smart-mouth answer! If you can't put weight on it, other than lightly when walking, you're either not going to shoot offhand, or you oughta try using a crutch under your weakside arm...

Anyway, I just now tried putting all my weight on my right foot, with the left just touching the floor for balance, and holding/aiming ain't easy. Doable, but not easy.

Dunno. You might try a sort of "lean back" stance, with your weakside elbow tucked in against your ribs...

Good luck,

Hey RR, How about just not shooting off-hand while your foot is healing?

The reason I suggest it, is because you do not want to develop some kind of a "bad habit" during the short time your foot will be out of service. Some bad habits are very difficult to get your body to un-learn.

Just do the kneeling, sitting, prone and bench positions for this short time span, or the ones of them you can do.

The "Lean Back", with a sling pulling the rifle tightly into the shoulder and the palm of the hand under the floorplate, makes a pretty rigid platform. This stance, used with the Olympic "Free Rifle", works better with the adjustable palm rest you may have seen...

Anyway, the center of mass of the rifle is roughly centered above the axis of the right leg.

Until you get used to it, it's sorta like, "Head down, tail up, nose to the grindstone, shoulder to the wheel: Now, try to work in that position!"

Pick up a copy of Cooper's "Art of the Rifle" and check it out. I ordered one from Amazon and got two.

Good guide on positioning, sling use, etc. My first reaction is for you to get off your feet. I think that 'lean back' method works best with about $200 worth of extra doo-dads that have absolutely no purpose whatsoever off of the target range. Try a sitting or prone position.
