How powerful?

Hi
I have some practice loads for my 45-70 that I really like. It's 340gn hard cast over 16 gun trailboss. Not that I plan to but what animal* would it be possible to ethically hunt with this load?

Yes I know it's not really that serious question I am not planning to hunt with it. It's just that I was thinking about it today at the range. But let's say 50-80 yards.

I don't know your barrel length, but at 24 inches, based on Hodgdon's data for 300 and 385 grain lead bullets, you should make about 1200 fps, which is 1120 ft-lbs with that bullet weight., so your in the range of a .44 Magnum handgun loads fired from an 8" barrel. For that reason I would expect any game you would find a .44 Magnum revolver suitable for hunting should also be possible to take with this load.

Trajectory, not killing power, becomes the problem with that load at extended ranges. As far as you can reliably hit the vitals, you can kill it. Penetration with that load would be extremely good.

Just to say that I like your load. l load about the same--360 gr moly coated bullet and a max load of Trail Boss. Very easy on the shoulder.

Yea it's really great no recoil at all. No recoil and that slow bullet allows me to se the impact in the sand when I am shooting it at 80-90 yards. That really helps a beginner like me with the practice.
