I have my grandmas old gun, a bolt action 410, and since she past away in 1993, I can't get any info on it. Maybe some of you might be able to help. I can't find a serial number on it. On the barrel is engraved "NEW HAVEN MODEL 273B 410 GA. 3INCH MADE BY O.F. MOSSBERG & SONS, INC. NEW HAVEN, CONN.,U.S.A. I am wondering if there is any way to find out the age of this gun without the serial number. Anyone?

call mossberg

call mossberg customer service on monday and tell them the model number, im sure they will have info on it,.

It's not listed in any of my books. The lack of a serial number means it was made before '68 when Federal law started requiring them.

Maybe these will give you feel for the era.

The 70, 73, 73B were made from '32 to '40.

The 173, 173A, 173Y were made from '57 to '73.

The 183, 183D, 283D(a), 183D-B, etc., etc. etc., 183K, 184T, 184Y, 284Y, were made from '48 to '85.

Hey thanks a bunch for the suggestions. I will call mossberg on Monday and see what I can dig up, I didn't think it was "that" old but I may be suprised.

I did get a hold of Mossberg this morning, and thought I'd submit this for anyone whom may be interested. They were able to narrow down the date to 1964-1966. Older than I thought. That just makes the gun that much more special to me. Thanks for your help all.

Mossberg has been making bolt action shotguns for a long time.

You see a fair number of older ones in the hands of new, and even some experienced, deer hunters in Pennsylvania every year.
