I have a Smith and Wesson, double action, 32 cal. and I would like to find out it's manufacture, ship, or purchase date. The serial number is 165296. I think the date should be early 1900's. Thank you. Charles Green

If you can't post a picture, at least tell us if it is a topbreak or a swing out cylilnder and, if a topbreak, if the hammer is visible or concealed. Also the actual caliber or caliber marking - S&W made revolvers in .32-20 as well as in .32 S&W and .32 S&W Long.

The pistol has a top break and the hammer is visable. The old ammo that has always been with it are 32 S&W. It's in it's original box and the only markings are,
Smith & Wesson
DOUBLE 32 ACTION
NICKEL. 3 INCH.

I will try and send a picture. Thanks

You have a S&W .32 Double Action 4th Model. Production of this version ran from 1883 to 1909. The serial number range is 43406-282999, and the cutoff for Antique status under U.S. law- manufacture prior to 1/1/1899- is serial number 209301. Assuming that the rate of production was relatively constant, your gun was probably made ca. 1895.

BTW that is one of the most pristine examples I've ever seen.
