how often do you clean your ccw/hd gun?

ive been reading some post about how people keep their dont unload their ccw guns for months.

if i did that id have a solid mass of dusty rust.

i live in louisiana so my gun is always in a warm humid environment.

i have to clean my carry gun weekly(not counting range trips), and my hd guns monthly.

i also clean the mags, and wipe down the ammo.

i try to shoot my ccw gun at least once a month, mainly because im in the range practicing with it every other week.

its nice to know i have a stainless steel barrel, where it shouldnt rust, only oxidize.

I only do a full cleaning after shooting. I go over all my guns with an oil rag at least once a month though... I've never had an issue with rust except with my hunting rifles etc.

I usually shoot every couple of weeks, and that vast majority of it using my carry weapon, so it gets cleaned regularly.

Dont you know that Sigs are self-cleaning?

;):D

(I function check and inspect my ccw before I holster..and clean it as needed)

I clean my carry weapon every time I fire it or once a month. Usually I am out training with it several times a month so it gets cleaned more often than once a month. It give me the chance to inspect all parts as well.

Owning a weapon is a lesson in discipline. This discipline is most often learned in the military when you are sitting in front of the armory with your weapon in pieces after the armorer wouldnt take it back because it was dirty. There are good reasons for that and thats because a little grit in the wrong place will make the M16 or M4 jam up nice. Its not an AK47 or AK74.

If you live in a humid environment or just dont like cleaning your weapons or dont properly store them, then get yourself a Glock. I know this advice may sound a bit off, but I cant think of any other weapon that keeps so well. I think if I buried this thing in the ground and returned 10 years later it would still fire.

The local cops usually carry the Glocks where the feds and the military carry the Sigs. I know who is smarter. The NYPD is the largest department that works during all 4 seasons in the rain and snow where there is a lot of foot patrols. They make theirs Glock.

Interesting statement.

Are you saying that the sidearms that the NYPD carry on foot patrol are better than the sidearms carried by US armed forces in locations all around the world? Do you think that the Glocks that the NYPD carry see anywhere near the weather and dirt that the military's Sigs and Berettas endure daily?

Oh...and who's smarter? Just curious: who would you rather have with you when walking the mean streets...a Fullujah veteran or a NYPD beat cop?

I can say from first-hand experience in the military that the weapons they carry could be better. The M16 or M4 jams way too easily when conditions become less then ideal.

My first experience with the M16 was on the ranges of Ft Knox, Kentucky. This fort is set in the Applachian Mountains with a climate that seems to constantly change. I was shocked to see how the weapon jammed with just a little bit of dirt from the range. How did the Army deal with the jammed up M16? Through such comedy routines as SPORTS...through training the troops to intensively clean their weapons all the time...through having their troops constantly carry the weapon in all sorts of odd contorted ways.

The Beretta gets smacked a few times and seems to rattle. I dont trust it.

The M60 looks nice with Rambo, but its not so forgiving of a weapon when that barrel overheats and its not so easy to fire.

I honestly believe our military could be using better weapons. The Russians dont use SPORTS with AKs. The AK has been a great weapon that many countries in the world have adopted. Few have adopted the M16. Until the assault weapons laws, many people enjoyed the AKs. You didnt have to do much maintenance or cleaning. No little green toothbrush cleaning routine like the M16.

Many of the weapons that the military fields have a political motivation behind it such as the Bradley which has been a controversial design for a long long time.

I think our troops would be better equipped with other weapons then the ones they currently have. I've seen the M16 jam up on a range. I cant imagine it while under fire. Law enforcement dumped their Berettas a while ago for Glocks.

Foot soldier technology had not been updated until the Iraq war. I think they have made a few big leaps, but there is still work to be done such as a better choice of individual weapons.

Dont get me started about boots...everyone I knew in the military ditched the issued boots and simply bought their own.

HK recommends cleaning their weapons after 5000 rounds. The G36 fired 24000 rounds (8-9k per day) without stopping. The test consisted of firing the weapon on fully automatic. After 240 rounds, the G36 was dipped into a barrel of water until it stopped boiling. The water was shaken off and then they continued firing. This went on all day for 3 days and 24000 rounds. Try that with anything that Colt or Beretta makes. Try that with an M16 or an M4.

Theoretically, I clean it as often as I shoot it, and I shoot at least once a week.

Realistically? I use a Glock, clean it whenever I feel guilty about it (or 500 rounds, whichever), and shoot as often as I can get to the range.

In theory, there's no difference at all between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I'm in Louisiana also, and I clean my carry guns about once every six months. I'll wipe them down every day, but cleaning isn't necessary, IMO. Other stuff gets cleaned once a year whether it has been shot or not.

The mean streets of the big city? Give me that old beat cop!

Walking the streets listening to an ol beat cop telling tourists not to cross the street mid block lest they get an A@# full 'a fender, and keeping the streets safe is one thing.

Should things really hit the fan--then that could be another. How about a street cop that's both?

Sig pistols that I regularly dry fire need to have the trigger mechanism flushed out from time to time with Gunscrubber, solvent, etc.--- then dried out (I use canned air), and re-lubed, in order to keep the trigger smooth.

Not a bad time to just clean the whole gun and relube. Otherwise I clean each time I shoot. If I shoot my carry gun, I use a Bore Snake to keep the chamber and feed ramp clean 'till I get home. For pistols stored in the safe, I check, from time to time, to make sure the lube hasn't disappeared.

I'm of the shoot = clean persuasion. Occasionally, I f only put a few (<50 rnds) through, I'll let it go until next time out, but that's for range guns. Carry guns get cleaned every time out, period. Everyone gets inspected more or less monthly, wiped with a Tuff-cloth. Northern NM is kind to firearms, cool dry climate overall.
