How much play in a Remington 1858 cylinder?

A couple of months ago I switched from 9mm semiautos to a Uberti made 1858 Remington .36 bought second hand for a sensible price.

After a few sessions at the firign range I am completely addicted to the "Zen tea ceremony" of loading the gun, the satisfaction in firing it, never go outside the "7" of the international pistol target at 25 metres), the fun in cleaning it in the kitchen sink with my kids, casting my own bullets...

I've noticed from the beginning that there is a slight play both longitudinal and lateral of the cylinder, in the reason of the tenth of millimetre, and I assumed that is normal, after all with the buildup of crud from the BP and with the metal dilatation with heath it would bind up quite fast if there wasn't a little play.

Am I right or should I worry about it?

TIA

You are correct. A small amount of cylinder end play is not only acceptable, it's necessary. Minimum amount should be around 0.003 inches. Maximum amounts vary as opinions, but more than about 0.010 inches is universally considered too much.

Thank you, given the results I am more than happy with the gun, but the rattle made me a bit nervous sometimes, even if I deemed sensible the play....

That's a normal fit for the Remington. Like Mykeal said these cap and ball revolvers have more play than a center fire counterpart.

That's a big change from a bottom feeder auto to a cap and ball smoker. It is a much more relaxed style of shooting.

"Relaxed" is the key word.

Yesterday with the Remington I put 42 rounds in two hours, all of them in the "black" of the International 25metres pistol target.

All bullets had been cast a couple of days before using bullets scrapped from the bullet stop at the firing range.

At the end of the session I was in a Zen state of fulfillment...

In the meantime in the nearby semiauto firing line the same shooter had sprayed 300 (!) rounds of 9mm and was angry as before...
