How much noise does your shotty make?

I was watching HIstory of the Gun the other night and this dude was firing his 12 guage repeatedly without any ear protection. I mean this guy was blasting away. I just wanted to know how many of you practice firing your shotguns without ear protection. Is it bearable? Is your 12 guage loud or do you definitely need ear protection?

Yes it is loud, but that is all relative. All of my shotgun work is done outside so mother nature has a little something to do with keeping the sound down.

However, I do lots of rifle shooting. The place I go to most often is a semi-enclosed sheet metal building and the sounds in there are VERY loud.

Ear protection? Everytime with the rifles. Most times with the handguns. 50/50 with the shotguns.

You will have hearing loss without hearing protection. It may not be all at once, and it might not be very noticeable, but after a while your hearing will decline.

I ALWAYS wear hearing protection with shotguns unless hunting. The 12ga is the quietest of the shotguns to me, the smaller gauges have a sharper report. You will have damage, permanent damage, to your hearing shooting a shotgun without hearing protection.

Need the hearing protection ALL the time. I even use it when shooting my suppressed weapons (surprise, they ain't as quiet as on TV!).

Once you're stone deaf, you don't need to wear hearing protection any more.

Shooting a shotgun without ear protection will get you there sooner or later.

Huh ?!?!?!

Perhaps he had some sort if "ear inserts" going? If not, he's got to be hard of hearing.

I always wear hearing protection, indoors or out ...

I'm 55, and have the hearing of the average septegenarian. Way too much of my early shooting was done sans protection. There's a lesson there....
