How much/many ammo/guns are enough?

Given the looming bans on handguns, "assault" rifles, hunting, and guns & ammo in general; and perhaps a meltdown of civilization due to political stupidity or other reasons.

How many different calibers, ammo types, and related stuff SHOULD one have on hand?

Buy all you can afford, sell the rest you don`t need when the time comes. ;)or trade for food.

It depends on a whole bunch of things.
How many in your family, where you live, what you know about survival, do you know how to shoot and when. You might want to learn to Bow Hunt, the bow is real quite. ( not much noise )Learning to trap animals, clean them, cook them etc.Check out some survival manuals. This can get quite involved, I hope you are up to it.

A hand gun,1. 12ga shot gun,2 rifles, 1. 22- 1. 30 cal.

Im sure some here can point you to a Web site that has all the survial food etc, listed, plus give you some of their thoughts on it.

You may not need it but it is better to be prepaired than not.

Then there's the second school of thought that you only need one and when TSHTF you get what you need from your enemies ;)
I'm not of that school, BTW

Dont worry about counting how many rounds you have its eaiser done by how many pounds you have...lol...and for all those nay sayers that say ya cant carry it all, thats what stashes are made for....fubsy.

[For the lurkers here, who probably view the premise of this question as paranoid, I encourage you to start paying more attention to firearms legislation. For example, NY this week.]

You might also want to consider a selection of sidearms. Stainless steel revolvers for example, such as Ruger, should nearly always go bang when you need them ... .38 and .357. And, it would appear that the more concealable sidearms will be under the most pressure ... you might want to have a number of those, so that you and your family have the tools you might need.

Everyone has their own preferences ... you'll see a great deal of debate here about calibers and brands. I think it is wise to have your defensive firearms based upon the most common calibers ... .38, 9mm, .357 Mag, .45, .22, .223, 7.62 x 39, .30-06 and .308.

You also might want to consider spare parts, magazines, etc.

Live and let live. Regards from AZ

Common calibers a must and the best would be stardard military calibers.A lot will depend on the terran.Open country you might think about a real long range rifle. It would give you an edge.
I am a FN nut so I am well set up with spare parts and 2 guns.No matter what anybody says I think handguns is allmost useless if SHTF.Be better off carring an extra couple of mags for the rifle.Same weight as handgun and ammo but do you more good.
My opinion of course.

Handguns are particularly good when firing in proximity to friendlies. As are blackpowder weapons, particularly precussion revolvers. Lot less barrier penetration, and a lot more surface area to badguy contact and resultant energy transfer. Also blackpowder and ammo is extremely easy to make at home compared to high power weaponry. Black powder is an exceptional backup option, and I think should be kept as an auxillary to a modern arsenal. When using pyrodex as much as possible, the smoke factor is also much more tolerable, and indoor defensive fire can be used without chocking on your weapon's fumes and setting off the smoke alarm.

Also, bayonets can be affixed to black powder weapons, which makes you infinitely more deadly than even a main battle tank

To round our your arsenal, a good selection of bladed weapons should be kept too. They can be quite useful for quiet disposal of intruders when you must take them out without alerting their buddies. Crossbows are also useful in this role, though not as effective against body armor as axes and broadswords.

Basically if you can get two weapons for each likely need, then you will be well off if there is a social collapse. Assuming there is no social collapse, it's really a matter of getting whatever you want really. Still, there is always a bit of social dischord, so at least one purely self defense weapon is a logical addition to your recreational picks.

Faster firearms, younger ammo, older pre-ban weapons and magazines, more money.

Get my point? :)

Well since you can never have too many, I guess you can never have enough either. :)

How many's enough?
There's NEVER enough, but my thinking is this: Whenever you need to rent a Ryder truck, just for the sole purpose of moving your collection, you're almost there. ;)

Hear, hear to the previous postings.

I suspect a significant percentage of gun purchases are being made in advance of increasing legal restrictions in the future. Is my friendly, neighborhood FFL alone in seeing his sales jump during the Clinton presidency? He can't stand the guy, but admits he has been great for business.

I further suspect it is not accidental that many of the calibers mentioned by previous posters are common military rounds.

Enough? One is enough but that's not the issue. "How many do you want?" is the proper question to ask. "All of them" would be a good answer.

I'll bag as many as I can. Whats the limit? :D

Without reading any replies to the original post, I'll just add this comment: I don't know how many/much is enough, but I do know that there is no such thing as too much money, too many guns, or too much ammo.

As many/much as you can afford plus 20%!

Bob's Minimum Loadout:

Rifles in each of the following calibers:

5.56x45, 7.62x39, 7.62x51, .22 LR

Handguns in each of the following calibers:

9mm, .45 ACP

Shotgun chambered for 3" 12-ga. shells.

Minimum of 1,000 rounds for each caliber, with the possible exception of the shotgun (maybe 500), and I would have 2-3 thousand .22 LR on hand, maybe more.

To me, that ought to get you going pretty well, and you can do just about anything you want or need if you are so outfitted.

Spend all of your ice cream and beer money on firearms, you'll lose weight and be ready when the droppings hit the fan. Seriously, it's easier to give a minimum than a maximum. If you can barely afford to feed the kiddos and pay the rent, one good defensive handgun will get you by. If you just cashed in your stock options from another dot-com IPO, celebrate with another gun.

My ex brother in law was a militaria collector, had a house full of M1s and 1911s and Lee-Enfields and Lugers and P-38s and Nambus and such. His friends thought of it as a museum but every damn one of them WORKED (except maybe the Nambu POS). He was majorly loaded for anyting that came along, and if anyone said he had too many guns, he'd go innocent-eyed and talk about6 preserving our patriotic history.
