How much longer???

Applied for my pistol license 11/24/2008. Interviewed by the Suffolk County PD January 8th 2009. Still gunless... Anyone out there with same experience?

Well, the bad news is that most counties in NY take 4-6 months. The good news is that you've already waited the 4. By law, they must deny or issue the permit within 6 months. Mine took 3 days short of 5 months after I was told 2-3. There was a MAJOR influx of permits in almost all areas immediately before and after the election.

My permit took 8 months (Oct-May) in NY, and I got mine last year. I was warned it could take upwards of a year. Be happy you don't live in Erie County (Buffalo area), getting a permit there is like getting water from a rock. When you get the interview call from the Sheriff or whomever will do it for you, you're about a month or two away.

You should have been more, um, "assertive". That length of time is illegal. Also, his county may not do interview calls, mine does not. The entire process is controlled by each county and they all have their own rules. Just about the only thing set in stone is the maximum time for issuance, 6 months.

§ 400.00 Licenses to carry, possess, repair and dispose of firearms.

4-a. Processing of license applications. Applications for licenses
shall be accepted for processing by the licensing officer at the time of
presentment. Except upon written notice to the applicant specifically
stating the reasons for any delay, in each case the licensing officer
shall act upon any application for a license pursuant to this section
within six months of the date of presentment of such an application to
the appropriate authority. Such delay may only be for good cause and
with respect to the applicant.
In acting upon an application, the
licensing officer shall either deny the application for reasons
specifically and concisely stated in writing or grant the application
and issue the license applied for.

In tennessee they are required by 3 months. It was getting long in the 2nd month, called and they issued it the day I called about it. Same thing happened with 2 other friends. If they have a number you can call and check on status maybe try that?

That's very true about the interviews; most people I've talked to from various counties around the 'great' state of NY have mentioned an interview in one form or another, though.

I sort of went with the 'can't fight city hall' maxim; as far as I was concerned, the important part was getting it, and when it happens, it happens. An extra couple months wasn't stressing me. I'd be more fixated on NY requiring permits period, but that's another topic unto itself, LOL.

I know what you mean. I'm sure the results of fighting it would be different in various counties as well. I had a friend of mine whose permit was taking an extra long time maybe 4 years ago. He finally had another friend who was an attorney write a letter that essentially said "Issue or deny so I can sue you." He got his permit within 72 hours. Other counties would probably be more like "Oh yeah sucker, now you're gonna fight for it."

Irritates the crap out of me though. You can bet your bacon that if some law says that you or I have 6 months to get something done then there are nasty consequences if we don't follow through.

In Florida, they are required to issue within 90 days unless there is a problem with the prints or record.

They are backlogged 90,000 applications and supposedly haven't even looked at 2009 applicants, according to the Dept of Agriculture.

They are claiming the 90 days begins once you are entered into the system, NOT when the app is recieved.

Apparantly, they have 60 temp workers starting this month.

In Mississippi it was originally one wqs to receive the permit within 120 days. The fingerprinting has changed to digital about three months ago and I was told that I would probably recieve it within 40-45 days. I applied in Feb. so I am checking the mail everyday. It was a homicide detective with the MS Depart. of Public safety that took my prints. He told me that the applications for concealed carry has more than doubled after the election of BO. I liked what he told me in a very serious voice, "EVERYLAW ABIDDIND CITIZEN SHOULD GET A PERMIT AND CARRY A GUN". Hmmm, he must know that the homicides/murders he investigates are not committed good, armed citizens, but by criminals!!!
