I have a Colt Detective Special made in 1979 that has only had about 200 rounds put through it and is is immaculate condition. Still have original box and paperwork. If anyone has any ideas, I would certainly appreciate them. Thanks

I was at a little shop outside Morehead, Ky a few days back, . . . fellow had one there in really good shape from what I could see.

I don't know the age, but unlike mine, there is a shroud around the cylinder pin out front to keep it from catching on clothing, holster, etc.

He wanted $320.00 out the door for it, . . .

May God bless,
Dwight

The last ones I saw were in a pawn shop. NO finish on one and scrungy varnished grips was priced @ $199.00. The second one had NO grips and showed heavy holster wear @ $299.00.

I've seen asking prices of $450 for Detective Specials in ho-hum condition. If it's in very good shape, I'd go as high as $350 for it—assuming it's blued, that is.

If you want a better price estimate (unbiased by resaler) go to a bookstore and look for the Gun Value Blue Book you don't have to buy it just look through and find your gun.

The Blue Book of Gun Values from 2001 sorry the newer ones are still packed calls a Third Issue Detective Special at $425 in 100% condition down to $140 in 10%

I like that.

I have on my books:

First Edition:

Blued: $550
Nickel: $625 (yeah, I'm surprised also)

Second Edition:

Blued: $350
Nickel: $395
W/3 inch barrel: add $95

I'm going off the 24th edition of the Gun Traders Guide.

Hope this helps (you know, OS on another board had a good thing going with using these books, but at $24 apiece, yikes).

Ion,

I bought this Colt DS 3rd issue, pictured below, a couple of weeks ago for $265 at a large outfitter-type store. It was built in 1974, and has some holster wear on the sides at the end of the barrel, and there is some tarnish on the hammer sides. Don't know how many rounds went throught it, but it seems to have been shot very little. No box included — what's in the photo, is how it came.
